I think the employees are still there, they just have little to do now unless there's a contracted event going on.

We go to Rend Lake a few times a year, Fitzgerrell SP is nice, some sites you can anchor your boat at your campsite but CoE campgrounds are a better value for this retired couple.

One place we like is Lake Glendale, the only NFS campground in the Shawnee with both electric and water hookups. And the shower house is open ALL YEAR LONG. It's a small lake and might be limited to trolling motors, I'm not sure about that.

Oh and to the OP, welcome to the forum!

Yes, unfortunately, the Shooting Complex has bitten the dust. Not sure if it's going to be permanent or if it will reopen after the budget is "fixed". We used to be able to see their event fireworks from the house. We did check out the camping spots when we were at the Home Show Event there a couple years back. All I can say is that their camping spots are basically no different than if camping in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Definitely no shade whatsoever.

Our neighbors, they are retired and usually stay for a month at a time at the COE CG's. Mostly Gun Creek area for them. But they also stay at the Sandusky's as well. Cost wise they say it's pretty reasonable for monthly rates. They have their discount card (?). Can't remember off hand the name of it now.

I will have to check out Lake Glendale. We have been checking into other CG's in the Shawnee area. Garden of the Gods area looks nice but is only Tent camping ( primitive ) from what I read. We have a tent as well, so maybe have to break it out and rough it for a few days, and take in the scenery.

As long as Chicago is part of Illinois, it will NEVER be fixed!

Garden of Gods (GoG) is a good rv campground with parking pads but NO Services. Outhouse and hand pump well only for water. Pounds Hollow is short ways down the road with small lake w/beach. They added Electric last year (still not shown on web site) to sites but for water you need to fill tank at Hydrant. As SkyWatcher mentioned Lake Glendale has Water and Electric at site. All these are NFS camps

Thanks Crunchman. Being new here is a learning experience. Just trying to navigate is difficult at first.

Went hiking a few times in Shawnee some years back. It was great there and didn't even think about camping there. When we finally get our TT I will have to consider it. Would also see what I need to boondock or dry camp. Is there a difference in boondocking or dry camping, or is it the same?

Not I, but it sure sounds like fun! Although, come to think of it, I am reaching those "reliving my youth years"!

Generally:

Dry Camping is camping in developed campgrounds that don't have any hookups.

Boondocking is camping in areas without any developed campsites, like in National Forests, deserts, farms, auto races and so on.
