Here's a start: Look in your owners manual and see what it says your towing capacity is. The capacity will depend your engine, axle ratio, box size, standard/extended/crew cab, heavy-duty cooling or not, etc. When you look at trailers, look at the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Ratio); ignore the dry weight, it doesn't mean squat. You're GVWR should not exceed your vehicle's tow rating. Personally, I would not exceed 75% of my tow rating, but many people do.
