New Member Thinking of getting a Forest River 5th

Hi everyone. New to the forum and have been out of RVing for awhile now but we are ready to get back into it! Just starting our quest for our next 5v'r so I'm sure I will have lot's of questions about some of the Forest River products. We are not set on this brand yet and are also looking at Open Roads and Arctic Fox to name a few. But I'm a guy who does his research and then does some more lol.

I'm retired Navy, 26 years in Subs and my wife is at the VA (part of the solution not the problem lol). We are in the Pacific Northwest and love it up here.

Looking for a bunkhouse model with outdoor kitchen, full shower not the angled type, we don't have kids anymore but the bunkhouse would be used more for an office and storage area as well as for the pets. We would like one side of the bunkhouse to be able to have a dinette if possible. So if anyone has some models to look at let us know!

Thanks for the help so far!
Dickson and Kathy.

Welcome! 26 years in tubes? Wow. I saw some nice ones at Bangor, then 9/11 happened, so no tour of Sherwood Forest...
What is your TV and what size trailer are you looking for?
The Arctic Fox and some others are all aluminum construction which I prefer.
Also, will you need a four-seasons fiver?

We have a 2013 RAM 2500 crew cab w/Cummins, it also has the RAMBOX in the bed so we will need to use a sidewinder hitch. I don't want to use a slider. Want to keep the trailer under 38'. When we started looking we were shooting for under 30' but as "our" list of wants kept growing so did the trailer lol.

What are your #s? Payload FAWR, RAWR, towing, GVWR, etc.?
How much do you carry in your truck (pounds)?
Old Coot and others will know what you can and cannot do.
epenydad made a towing calculator. I think this is it. Towing Planner Hopefully he'll chime in.

Those are some good numbers. What trailers do you like so far? Budget?

Have you weighed your truck with you, your wife, dogs and any gear plus full tank of fuel? That will tell you what you still have left for available payload and how much room you have left on your rear axle. You want your loaded pin weight to be less than those numbers. Remember pin weight will likely be close to 20% of loaded fiver weight but could be as much as 25% of loaded weight. If you don't know how much weight you will be loading in you can do calculations using gvwr of fiver but know that average is approximately 1500 lbs cargo added to dry weight. Sadly the 2500 ram is gonna limit you some on trailers as it's payload will likely come up a bit short (remember your hitch will likely weigh in around 150 lbs by itself). Check out the palomino puma and sabre silhouette lines as they are some lighter weight options. If they are missing the dinette, you could probably special order that instead of a bottom bunk or sofa. Another option for you might be a toy hauler. You can convert the back area into an office and area for the dogs. Remember some toys have a dinette in the back.
