New NY Rockwood owners
My wife, 2 sons (3 & 1) and I just bought a new 2014 Rockwood 2306. Brought it home from Ohio and noticed 2 things immediately. Gas mileage suffers quite a bit and it was stressful to back into the driveway!
Expected about the first trip next week, a bit nervous about parking in a campsite!

Congratulations on the new Rockwood. You'll make great memories for your family. Yep, gas mileage suffers...but look at it this way. That's the price of getting out and enjoying camping with your wife and two kiddos.
As far as backing, before you go on your first trip, hook up and go find a large, empty parking lot - schools during the summer are great practice areas. Position some cones or plastic water bottles or anything, and just practice backing in and out of spaces until you feel comfortable. Practice backing in from both directions...backing to your left will be easier because you can see everything better, but practice from the other side, too. Sometimes, you don't have a choice and you have to back in from your "blind" side.
Get comfortable with your trailer, and then go and

Congrats on your 2014 Rockwood 2306. A tip for backing up - get your Flex and camper straight in line with each other. Put your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. Move your hand/steering wheel in the direction you want to back end of the camper to go. Practice is essential, Capt. Mikes suggestion of finding a empty parking lot to practice in is a great one. Besides empty school lots a church parking lot during the week may work too.

x2 Congrats on your new 2306. We have a 2012 2306 and love it and no problems with it so far. Have fun, practice and like all the others say use you hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. We too are from Upstate New York.. where will be your first trip. We are heading out to the NJ shore soon... then Maine for lobsters....

We went up to Wellesley Island on the St Lawrence river near Canada. Fantastic time! Next weekend off to Chenengo State park in Binghamton ny

Congrats! Make memories and miles!
Our DD's have been camping in a hybrid and now a TT since about that age and love it. It is the most constructive family time you can get. They have learned some real life lessons and have built their confidence tremendously. They understand safety, conservation (of water / battery power when dry camped), recycling as much as possible, leaving our area as clean or cleaner than we find it, how to improvise when something is forgotten at home, they enjoy nature and respect her dangers as well.
I actually rely on DD (10) for directions when hitching up... she is a better guide than DW..LOL...
We do a mix of state parks, resort type campgrounds, and sometimes just any spot to use as a home base for sightseeing (like Washington DC) Our trips are always a adventure. Now the DD's are starting to plan some trips and menus for a few of our excursions. DD#1 (10) recently did a school project on Cumberland County, NJ and has planned a trip for us in the fall to see some of the areas she researched and learned about...

Hand-held radio's come in handy..... had to teach the wife how to use it, but now she enjoys helping me back into camp sites..... and I agree with others, practice, practice, practice.....

Dieselbobcat, what a cool idea to let the kids plan a trip or two, to see something that they, themselves, are interested in. When our son was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, his oldest daughter got very interested in Honest Abe. On her first camping trip with us, our granddaughter wanted to go to Springfield, IL to see all of the Lincoln sights. A truly memorable trip for all of us...DW and me because it was the first time we had the granddaughter with us, and our granddaughter, because she got to plan the trip to see something she wanted to see.

Gas mileage might suffer but the good times & family memories will make up for it.
