New RVer from Louisiana

Just picked up my "new-to-me" 2011 Forest River Wildwood 26TBSS. It's our first camper, so I'm looking forward to getting it on the road and to a park. I used to camp a lot in the 60s and 70s, but probably not since high school.

I want to travel. My DW thought we'd wait until retirement, but I said we should buy a used trailer and practice our retirement. And so here we are. Unfortunately she works most weekends, so I'm still not sure how we're going to get a lot of camping done.

I probably have a few questions, but I'll look around a little first. I helped my dad with his campers, but that was 40 years ago. But we had base model campers and I'm sure a lot has changed since then.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your trailer. This is a great place to get advice from knowledgeable people. Remember no question is a dumb question but beware of some dumb answers lol. No seriously, great people here. Best of luck and safe travels.

Welcome from Texas!

You might want to try some 'driveway camping' to get a feel for camping in that rig.
If that's not possible, see if you can find an RV park within easy driving distance and find out what it would cost to camp for a month. Rates can vary from $200 to over $500 depending on location and amenities.

Best to find out if the lifestyle fits your expectations for travel before you retire. We bought our small tt and loved traveling in it, but some people try it and quickly sell their rig when they find it not to their liking.

Hi, I'm originally from Alexandria, LA. We had the same plan, to try it out before retiring and I worked a lot of weekends. We only got a few 2-4 night campouts in before we sold our house and moved into our MH full time last March. Quite a challenge, we love it.

Finding a one month camp site nearby or camping in your driveway for a trial is a great idea. I am still thinking "why did I keep this??" or "why did I NOT keep this??"

Oh, I think weekend camping is going to be great. We've fixed it so my wife gets a weekend off mostly each month and are ready to go. We'll set it up in a near by RV park while we have relatives in town next week and our first trip will probably be in April to a park about 70 miles away.

Welcome from Michigan. We were in Louisiana last year. Our DD and son in law are at Fort Polk. No easy way to get there from here. Did 3 days down and 3 days back and stayed for a week during the Freedom Festival over the 4th.

That's one heck of a trip. I have a sister in Iowa. I'll make that trip someday, but I'll be sticking around, making a few short ones first.
