New to Roo

Greetings from the mountains of Southwest Virginia. After 11 years of camping in a pop-up (2002 Coleman Utah) I decided I wanted a little more space & convenience and a little less set-up/take-down. I've always liked the idea of the hybrids - you still get the feeling of sleeping in the open air with the bunk ends, but with the convenience of a hard-sided travel trailer. Checked out lots of different floorplans online & kept coming back to the Roos, especially the 21SS. About 4 weeks ago, I decided it was a nice day for a drive & made a spur-of-the-moment trip to an RV dealer who carried a lot of Forest River products. They had a used (barely) 2013 21SS in stock. It looked even better in person that in the photos. They quoted me a very reasonable price and offered a pretty good trade-in on the pop-up. So a week later, I signed lots of papers & the Roo came home with me. Last week was the maiden voyage - long weekend at Four Paws Kingdom Campground in Rutherfordton, NC. I thought it was very successful. Still on a learning curve with things like weight-distributing hitches, black water hoses (the pop-up didn't have a potty), and more, but I survived and so did the Roo. Looking forward to many years of fun with the Roo.

As for me - my name is Ann. I live in a small town in Southwest Virginia called Big Stone Gap. (If you've read the book "Big Stone Gap" by Adriana Trigiani, yes, it's the same place.) Started tent camping at NASCAR races in 1997 to avoid traffic & ridiculous hotel costs. Moved up to a pop-up in 2002 for a little more comfort. Decided the camping was more fun (and less expensive) than attending the races in about 2007. So now I camp for fun with full hook-ups & watch the races on TV. And now I've upgraded from the pop-up to the Roo.

Still learning about hybrid camping so I'm sure I'll have lots of questions. Thanks in advance for all the help I know I'll get!

Congrats!

Many of they hybrid owners around here also came from popups. Our plan was to go to a hybrid because we wanted to keep the tent ends. We also found that the more we looked at the Roo, the more we liked it. And the as we've gotten to use it, we continue to appreciate it even more. Lot's of features we didn't have with popup.

Congrats on your 2013 Roo 21SS Ann. Below is a link to a forum dedicated to hybrids I spent some time on when we had our hybrid. Lots of knowledgable and helpful people there. Link: Hybrid Explorer

Thanks, Wiscampsin. Looks like the hybrid forum is "related" to the Pop-Up Times forum. I spend a LOT of time there when I first got my pop-up so I'm sure this one will be helpful also!

We camp at Four Paws five or six times a year. Love it. Enjoy your Roo.

Welcome!
We chose a Roo because it had the most sleeping capacity for the weight. I also rented a popup before buying the Roo, and thought the setup/takedown process was tedious and would not be fun in the rain.

Welcome to the "Roo Kroo"!!!

be sure to browse both the Roo and Shamrock sub-forums, in the Expandable/Hybrid section here at FRF.
both are twin brands and you'll find a number of 21SS owners there.
