Newbie to TT and 5ers. feedback on hitch's

Hello Everyone,

Totally new to towing anything at all and just about to buy a 05 Cardinal 29LE .. I have a 2002 f350 7.3 power stroke diesel with 3.73 gearing.. Trying to figure out the ideal 5th wheel hitch for my rig..

Dealer is recommending a Reese 16K? I have read too much and am a bit overwhelmed.. I do intend to be on some rough back roads and seeking
feedback from FR "experts" .
Thanks in advance..
Michael

Welcome to FRF!

I have an old Reese 15k (this style is now rated 16k) for my 5'er and have been happy with it. It's probably pushing 13 years old as I bought it used. One of the advantages of the 16k over the 15k Reese is the left and right articulation as well as the front and back articulation. In my opinion it's worth the extra $100. The only downside to the typical Reese style 5'er hitch is the rails stay permanently mounted in the bed of the truck but I really haven't had any issues with 'em.

You could spend a WHOLE lot of money on a hitch and you can find a WHOLE lot of opinions out there. If you are going to be full-timing it then that hitch may not be the one for you. But if you are the average or even above average camper then the 16k Reese will serve you well for many many years.
