Nuther newby, from Illinois.

Hi ya'll, I am totally new to this rving thing and am contemplating my first purchase of one. I have been feverishly inspecting new and used rv's all over Tulsa Oklahoma, where I am currently working. As an aircaft inspector, and a lifetime gearhead, I do have a very critical eye on all things electromechanical. Anyway after looking at dozens of different models and floorplans, new and used, I've pretty much convinced myself that a Rockwood 8314bss most closely meets me and my wife's (and our dog's) needs. Aftr looking at a myriad of new railers with loose trim, unclosable doors and warped cupboard doors, I was pleasently surprised when I walked into this one. I haven't had the chance to do any ops checks on it yet, so my assesment is nowhere ner complete, but so far, the fit and finish of this particular trailer is winning hands down over anything else I've seen.
I guess my first questions on ths is all about weight. Specs on it says it eighs 6390lbs dry, but 8289lbs loaded. Is the 8289lbs a rough guesstimate from the manufacturer? Because the first trip I'm planning will be from Grafton Illinois to Savannah Ga. My little half ton is supposed to be good for 9600lbs towing capacity, but does that take into consideration the Appalachian mountains? Will my truck pee on itself when we hit those hills?

"Turna and turds". HAHA! As an auditor, I get called all kinds of things. Oddly, I feel a great sense of accomplishment when I discover that I've been immortalized on the bathroom wall at companies I've audited.

Welcome to the forum.

It would help to know what your truck is.

Rockwood 8314BSS
Dry Weight 6389lbs
GVWR 8597lbs ****
Cargo Capacity 1900lbs
Hitch Weight 851lbs

Of course the factor is the GVWR of your tow vehicle. A ½ ton will struggle pulling this trailer. I know from experience. My trailer is similar in weight and my ½ ton sucked the gas in hilly areas and I worried about overheating the tranny. But really the big factor is stopping. I didn’t feel comfortable with the stopping ability of the ½ ton. A year later I ended up getting a ¾ ton diesel. I was looking for a ¾ ton gasser when I found my current diesel at a great price. No more worries.

This is just my humble opinion.
