Payload capacity

Picking up a 2014 Rockwood 8244ws fifth wheel tomorrow. Just curious why the payload capacity is so low. My former 2006 crossroads cruiser 28 rl had a payload of 3670 lbs but my new rockwood is only 1458. The cruisers dry weight was 7400 and the rockwood is 6500. So the payload seems disproportionately low for the size of trailer. Is it the type of suspension that limits it or maybe the revolution pin box? If it is the pin box, I can put it back to the non revolution mode since I have a long bed truck and it should make the pinbox more rigid. When I'm full with propane and water (tank and water heater) I will have only 1000 pounds of capacity left. It seems that I might have to be very careful I don't overload this trailer. Any suggestions as to why the payload is so low and what can be done to increase it a bit?

Payload on your unit cannot be raised.

The short answer is:

Undersized axles and tires.

I agree with TURBS...no way to increase the stated payload capacity of the trailer as it's a function of GVWR and the actual trailer weight as built.

Short of jettisoning some of the OEM installed equipment, there isn't any real way to increase your cargo carrying capacity that I can come up with. Maybe you could move some items (spare tire, propane tank, fire extinguishers) to the TV or maybe just haul some of your gear in the TV if it has some available payload left.

Best wishes.

The Revolution Pin Box is smaller (narrower) than any other, can not be changed. It is rated at 10,000 lbs. The axles and frame are both undersized for more payload. With our trailer we are weighed at near maximum payload, we have no more room for anything based upon available space.

Thanks for input. Picked it up today. Beautiful trailer. Used only 9 days and total of 250 km. Just like brand new for far less than new cost. Tires are load range C. I had expected D. However the pleasant surprise was the cargo carrying capacity on the sticker on trailer says 1930 which is better than sales brochure which says 1458. I will be very careful to stay well below if possible and carry heavier items in tv.

There is a reason that trailers are called "Ultra lite" or equal wording. They are not built strong enough to have a large payload number. Lighter tires and axles, less structure, lower capacity water tanks, built more for weekend getaways and not long distance extended stays. When we bought our TT the payload number was meaningless to me, now it sure matters. My CCC is 1250 lbs, which sounds like alot until you look at all the stuff you take. As said before to raise the CCC you need heavier axles and tires and structure assembly. To do that means cost and weight.
