Rookies to the RV World!
I'm Dick and my wife is Tracy, from Owen Sound. Ontario, Canada. I'm a retired first responder and we wish to travel beautiful North America. Are first trip is to see Western Canada. We are leaving in a month. After nearly a year of searching we settled on a 2018 Rockwood Geo Pro 14fk to tow with my 2015 Jeep Wrangler unlimited. Thanks for all the info. I have read. It can be overwhelming for us Rookies and we look for any advise. I've added a backup monitor, Fastway WDH and electric brake controller Now we're driveway camping to get the feel. Any advise is always appreciated. Thanks

ALL of us were Rookies at one time! Going forward is fairly straight forward. When backing up always put Tracy back there to be your eyes. Have her just point to the direction your need to go. No waving arm around in circles.
Level your trailer side to side first. You might put a bubble level on front of the trailer where you can see it. When that is completed caulk the wheels and disconnect. Then level the fore-aft with the tongue jack.
When backing put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and move the wheel in the direction you want the rear end to go.
Be sure to use a water pressure regulator when hooking up. You don't want to blow out your water lines.
Leave your black water tank valve closed until you're ready to dump. Dump only when full. Have about a half tank of grey water in its tank to flush the hose after you dump the black.
Take your time and think things through. It'll all work out.

Thanks for the great advise. I like the idea of the hand on the bottom of the steering wheel. I will definitely try that! A spotter will be a must. I read all sorts about a water pressure regulator too. Thanks again.

have a great time -
When we bought our first camper, I had the thought to buy in the fall and go out on a 5000 mile trip in the spring, basically it would be our first outing. Then I thought better of that and we bought the camper earlier than planned so we did a full season of local camping - both weekends and a week long camping trip before we took off on a long trip. Helped us to fully get to know the camper and what we would be needing to take with us - was actually very helpful for us. We repeated the same scenario with the second camper, we bought it a year before we headed out on a three week trip - was still very helpful.
So, I would highly recommend getting in a couple of short trips in before you head off on your wild adventures - which by the way sounds like alot of fun.

One more thing. I've found that is more difficult to back a small trailer than a large one. Take it real slow! It's quick to swing one way or the other. I had no problem backing a 40' 5th wheel but a devil of a time with a utility trailer.

Yes I have a 20' Sea Ray boat on a trailer with a long tongue, it was straight forward. But this is like backing up a lawn cart with a lawn tractor. Easier just to unhook it and push! Lol

Hi. Welcome to the camping world. Our first trailer after being boaters was a 13ft. Fun, but it didn't take long to get footitis. We then got an 18fter, and this Tuesday we are picking up our new Rockwood 2109s. Maybe, fortunately, that is as big as we can go and still keep it in the driveway, since we are on the sidewalk side of the street. Cheers to driveway camping!
p.s. A tip to make backing up easier...just before backing into a campsite, unhook your electric brake. If you are reversing into a campsite, and tap your brake in the tow vehicle, it will apply the trailer brakes and make it harder to ease gently into a site. We used to have that problem before we got the truck with the trailer tow/reverse pkg.

Rookies to the RV World!
You should have lots of fun experiences while traveling. Our 1st was a 11 Keystone Passport we pulled it with a LR3. We then changed to a 12 Laredo 5 th wheeler pulled by a F250. Last August we moved up to a 11 Berkshire 390RB. All learning experiences. Create or find a check off list for when you arrive and depart. Routine makes the tasks easier. Course I’m usually inside wrangling the girls and dogs.
