Seasonal ranger from Virginia

Hello! My name is Vickie, and I'd like to introduce myself.

I am currently living a rather unpredictable but enjoyable life. I have a wonderful job, which is, alas, seasonal. I work summers in state parks or more recently the National Park Service. It's great, but I have spent all summer in park housing, desperately missing my cat and pet rats that had to stay in VA with my parents. In June I started researching ways to make nationwide seasonal work more feasible without leaving my furballs behind.

I intended on buying a used RV, but when I got to the dealership, the ones I liked the most had been sold. There were a few new ones in my price range. I did some weighing of pros and cons and ended up buying a 2014 Wildwood 26TBSS.

It fits all I'm looking for. The bunk space will be my "pet corner," and the pocket doors helped sell it for me as a way to close off my cat Lily if needed. I don't have a tow vehicle yet. My dad's van can move it in an emergency, and in the meantime, I figure I can hire someone to move it when I find my next job.

I'm very excited about this new lifestyle. It gives me a new sense of both flexibility and stability that I was searching for when renting apartments and trying to move with (or miserably without) pets.

Wow ! Welcome to the forum!
Depending on distances traveled it might be cheaper in the long run to have it towed to your spot for a fee.
My son wanted to go into the dnr programs but decided to do physical therapy instead.
Congratulations on the camper and new lifestyle!
Good luck and have fun!

Thank you for the warm welcome!

I definitely feel more secure when applying for far away positions. I feel much more confident about my ability to relocate on short notice.

It will be in VA for the time being. I've had no luck finding winter work, so I'll be parked in my parents yard. At least I'll have time to get everything I need and try things out. I'd like to get my cat used to the idea too. (She's a good indoor-only cat. Good on a leash, loves her scratching post, not a door dasher. Usually comfortable in unfamiliar places if I'm with her. I think she'll do well.)

I have job applications out as far away as CA and as close as WV, but nothing looks promising yet. Spring is always easier to find educator/guide/interpreter positions. (I'll be applying to VA state parks in spring too.)

South Boston area. I worked as Education Support Specialist at Staunton River Battlefield from 2009 to 2012. They didn't get funding for my position this year. :P But I found a position in the NPS in North Carolina.
