Sounds like you have a great setup. Thinking it must be quite a bit of difference in the 3.5 vice the 2.7.

I have the 3.5L ecoboost with max tow option and it will pull 8000# trailer all day long with no problems or struggle. Ford claims mine is rated at 11,500#

The big difference is the Max Tow Package Roger. The rear end is the other difference. If you knew you were going to be towing when you bought the truck I am sure you would have made a different choice. Diesels are not really the answer unless you have a large garage, like the smell of diesel fuel and the extra noise. I have had several of them and truly disliked them.

On the other hand if you are going to tow 20-30,000 miles a year the torque is nice if you need it.

I have 2015 XLT 4X2 with 2.7L. The trailer is too much for a 2.7L Ecoboost. The max possible for a Scab 4X4 with the 2.7 is 8200 lbs per the towing guide but this is a low optioned trim with the 2.7L payload pkg and 3.73 rear end. The 2.7L payload pkg should not be confused with the Heavy Duty Payload Pkg which is for the 3.5L Ecoboost. You didn't mention what rear end you have but the 3.55 will limit you to 7600 lbs.

What most F-150 owners run out of first is payload. For the Scab the max payload for your truck is on the yellow sticker inside the driver's side rear door. You need to take this value, subtract the driver weight, all passenger weights, all cargo and any customer added options such as bed liners. You also need to subtract the weight of the hitch head (75-100 lbs). I use 75 lbs for my Equal-i-zer WDH. The result is the available payload for the trailer.

Take this result and divide by .13 (13% tongue weight) which will give you an estimate of the maximum trailer weight you can tow. The typical trailer tongue weight is between 10%-15%.

As an example for my truck:
Available payload - 1541 lbs
Driver/passengers - 300 lbs
Cargo/firewood/etc - 150 lbs
My additions - 100 lbs
Hitch head - 75 lbs

Gives me an available payload of 916 lbs.

Assuming a 13% tongue weight that gives me a hypothetical max trailer gross weight of 7046 lbs (well under the 7600 lb value from the towing guide).

If you have more payload and you don't exceed the max GCVWR you might still exceed the receiver maximum weight. There is a sticker on the receiver that gives the maximum tongue/trailer weight. I've seen a couple of different values so it is best to check your truck.

I currently tow a 3100 lb (weighed weight) TT. I get great performance from the truck but based on what I've learned I would say the practical towing limit is more in the 5K- 5.5K lbs loaded weight range. This is to keep the good performance I currently have on steep hills and in the mountains.

There is some misinformation on this thread. Max Tow 3.5EB does have a tow rating of 11,200 plus or minus a bit. "No replacement for displacement" is quickly becoming an opinion of people stuck in the past.

That said, the OP has the smaller EB. I use the 3.5 to tow 7k pounds and it is a great match. I'm fairly certain the OP would be unhappy.

We had a 832ikbs and the tongue weight will be more like 1200-1300 pounds. Not 900.

Believe me that truck will not do it. Mine will but I need more WDH.
My actual hitch weight is 1,110#, which is 12.25%. (1,116)

We took our time from our home south of Nashville to Panama City and stayed on hwy 231 all the way down and back but there's some really big hills on that hwy
On my way to Port St Joe next weekend... How is Hwy 231 from Nashville down? I have been on 231 south of Montgomery, but usually hit I-65 after that to go north.

I like hwy-231 all the way because there's hardly any heavy traffic (18 wheels are few) and far between. Speed limits from 65 to 55 mostly except small towns. I usually just take my time and run 55 to 60 tops. Plenty easy in/out gas stations and places to eat.

I have a 2011 F150 SCAB with the factory tow package, the EB 3.5l motor and the 3.55 rear. The motor makes 365hp and 420fp's of torque. The GVWR is 7200lbs and my payload is around 1800lbs. My GCWR is 15500lbs. My trailer is about 7500lbs loaded and I know it is back there BUT it weighs 7500lbs! So....

Right now this truck is PERFECT for what we need. I say this because there are so many people who nay say the ECOBOOST but mine has 153,000 miles on it and performs as advertised (despite the small displacement). I personally believe that I am at or close to my max trailer weight for me to be comfortably pulling.

In the OP's configuration I personally would not be comfortable being that close to maximum on so many points.

Retired Truck Salesman Here

Definitely too much trailer based on Ford's ratings. Your GCWR is either 12800 or 13300 lbs. Your trailer with stuff loaded is going to push at least 9000 lbs. With just your truck not including passengers, tongue weight etc you will be over 14000 lbs. Will it do it probably. Is it a good idea I definitely think not.

Unfortunately I'm afraid you're right. Sence I posted the question and done additional research (which I should not done up front) I know I'm extremely boradline and maybe slightly over. I know it will pull the trailer cause we just got back from Florida 465 mile on way and it did a good job. I felt it to be a safe trip but was afraid it might of been hard on the 2.7 liter engine (it is a tough ready to go engine). It did not use any oil and preformed well. Thinking old school -just need a little bigger truck.

Yeah I have the 2016 3.5 EB with a payload of 1830 because the 36 gal tank. My limit was no more than 7K dry when I was shopping for a TT. So I am currently towing loaded around 8K, I can't imagine you wanting to tow a heavier TT with the 2.7.

Just remember that tow ratings are maximims. It's like toilet paper. Sure 2 squares will do.....but sometimes more makes the job more comfortable. Heaven forbid it is RV toilet paper....

I own the same truck (2016 supercrew 4x4 short bed 2.7) but with the 3.55 rear end. My trailer is easily 8000 lbs loded. my tow rating is 7500. The 2.7 tows BETTER that all my past trucks for this weight (87 F350 dually diesel, 87 Suburban 454, 99 Dodge Ram, 2006 F 250 diesel) hands down. Key is a very good weight distribution hitch (set up properly) , good trailer brakes (with integrated FORD oem brake controller) and driving sensible. Its funny to read folks with other brand trucks that have never towed with an Ecoboost. The owner of the rv dealer where I bought my TT test drove my truck (with the 2.7) and said it towed as good or better than his personal 2014 F150 (3.5 Ecoboost).
The 2.7 has more power than you will need. the engine is built like a diesel
(heave, reinforce block and heads, Rn in the Baha 1000 (driven from and back to Detroit!)

I beginning to agree with you. It's all in the preparation, loading and getting the weight distribution correct. I too have the tow package with 3:55 rear end. I'm never in a hurry to get anywhere so doing 55/60 mph is good for me. So thinking I'll just keep trucking with my with my 2015, 2.7 liter, EcoBoost. Thanks

Just to do a quick followup:
Bought a new 2016 F-250, Power Stroke, 6.7 diesel, 355 rear end, 440hp, I think it's like 410 fp torque. Maybe this truck will pull my TT Flaggstaff
832-IKBS. .
