Trip to Alaska

Hi, we just purchased our first motorhome, a new 2014 25 foot FR Solera. Our first big trip will be to Alaska from Colorado via the AL-Can Highway the end of July and have never driven this route. Wanted to know if we should purchase additional spare tires. We have one and don't know if more are necessary. We know that the road used to be rough, but haven't talked to anyone who made the trip recently. We have AAA and Coachnet as well as Progressive insurance so will have 'roadside assistance', but are not sure if we should have our own tires. We also welcome any other words of advice concerning places to dry camp or stay at rv parks along the way. Any suggestions as to how many miles per day we can expect to comfortably travel - we are in our 60's with 2 dogs are also requested. Thank you so much. - Bob

I had no tire problems. Road is much improved - but watch for frost heaves. Also some long gravel construction zones. Friend lost windshield to stone from a truck going the other way. I did carry five gallons of spare fuel - did not use (got close once).

We are currently in Alaska having made the trip from Florida. The Alaska Highway is fairly good for most of the length. The portion between Whitehorse and the US border is the worst stretch. Was down to 10-15 mph during some of that section. Take your time and be aware of the bad points usually marked by cones or flags on the sides of the road.
