I know this thread is worthless without pictures. I'll get some tomorrow when it is light outside.
I have been thinking about doing this mod for a while. The mod is changing the wheels on my blue boy. Hopefully making it easier to move on surfaces other than a hard surface and make it quitter when pulling the tank empty. Also I have noticed that the wheels that came on the tank, especially the front wheels, are getting chewed up.
While reading the thread “Dump station tips, tricks and mishaps”, I saw where “JohnandPandra” had already done this mod to his tank. Thanks to John for the information on the mod.
This is an easy mod and I used the original axles that came on the tank. All of the parts were bought at Harbor Freight Tools. I spent less than $20.
For the front axle I bought 2, 6” semi-hard rubber wheels. They also have pneumatics in the 6” size, but they are $19 each and I didn’t think this mod was worth that. They are $4.49 each and here is the link to the ones I bought;
6" Semi-Solid Wheel
Also you need 4 X 1/2” washers. I had these at the house….
For the back axle I bought 2, 10” pneumatic wheels. They were/are on-sale for $5 each and here is the link to these.
10" Pneumatic Tire with White Hub
First and hardest step is removing the hubs, they are the kind that press on and don’t want to come off. I managed to get 1 hub on each axle off without tearing it up. If I did tear one of them up my back-up plan was to drill a hole in the axle and use a washer and carter pin to reinstall.
Next, the front axle was too long for the wheels I bought so I cut with a hack saw, 1” off the end that now doesn’t have a hub on it. Then I installed 1 of the 6” wheels through the axle to the hub that I didn’t remove. Next slide 2 of the ½” washers, now slide the axle through the front wheel support. Next are 2 more ½” washers then the 2nd 6” wheel. The hubs should be next to the plastic rims and reset inside the rubber wheels when installed correctly. Tap the hub back on the axle.
Assembly of the back axle is very similar to the front. No need to cut this axle. You will see 2 spacers that came on the tank. I had to remove them and cut 1 of them in half. Install 1 half on each side where the original spacers were.
