5th Airborne Pinbox

We had some banging and chucking from this fifth wheel that we did not have with our previous trailer. I moved some weight forward to help minimize this issue but it didn't completely eliminate it. I bought a 5th Airborne pinbox and installed that. The first trip out was somewhat better. After some readjustments and a 2800 mile trip I have it dialed in and it works fantastic. No more chucking and banging. The ride is much nicer too. I just need to make an adapter for the pinbox cover.

Nice to hear you got it all fixed up. Sounds like something I should check into.

Do you adjust the air in that air bag or is it sealed?
How did you figure out which one you needed? I guess have to measure the mounting plate.

Look inside your pin box and there is usually a 4 number model. Got mine thru etrailer.com. They were easy to work with and advise.

There is an air bag and a line to fill above. I think I run 60 psi. Helps a lot.

I have a question for both\either of you. I'm considering getting either 5th Airborne or Trailair and I have the Lippert number off the side of the factory box. The question is...will the replacement be exactly the same dimensions, length, height etc as the Lippert? Mine is an extended pin box making it possible for tight turns with a short bed truck and don't want to lose that ability.

Mine also has a Lippert frame and pin box so all I did was cross that # to the replacement and it fit the same but with the air pressure set to the arrow tips as they suggest it did sit higher on truck when sitting still. When pulling down the road it drops down to the same 6-7 inches above the frame rails as before.You also have to raise the trailer a few inches higher to get hooked up with air in the pin box.

Thanks Brian, My trailer sits at 13'4" and certainly do not want to be any taller than that going down the road for obvious reasons.

I checked with the Wildcat rep and found that my trailer had the lipert 1621 pinbox. As my fifth wheel is on the low end of the pin weight I adjusted the bag position for a lighter trailer. The pressure is adjustable and their directions suggest starting out with about 80 pounds of pressure and I am at about 75. It did not change the height of the trailer, the trailer was riding level with the original pinbox and is still level. The dimensions on mine are slightly different as I need to make some adapter for the pinbox cover that came with the trailer.

Thanks for the replies. I too have that 1621 Lippert. Looks like an air box in my future.

I had make a small notch in the front of pin to get in the upper bolt holes for the correct ride height and spacing. It bolted in both positions easy. I bought new grade 8 bolts to be safe.

Both are good units. The trail air was only shipped to a business where as fifth airborne shipped to the house and $100 cheaper at that time. Paint and one sticker was rubbed up but I wanted the bolts painted so not too big of deal.

Wished I had done sooner and will not buy another RV without one of them.

I've bought 2 of these from the link below. Best price I could find. I will not own another 5er without one of these hitches. I run 68 psi.
