Added bathroom shelf space
Hi all. Itching to get camping so decided to do a mod while waiting for the snow to melt. With limited space in our 1 year old Surveyor 192t, I was going to just add a shelf above the toilet for towels, etc. but then I realized there was one already there. Check it out, zero dollars in supplies and 2 hours worth of work. Can't wait to show the wife when she gets home from work!

So you opened up some dead space that was already there, if I'm seeing it right.
Cool!
BTW, That wall looks like the perfect spot for a long towel bar.

Thanks! I was thinking the same thing with the towel bar. Yes the shelf went behind the bathroom wall already with no access. Opened it up and now will have tons of space for towel storage.

We made shorter towel racks and put them on the inside of the door at heights that one towel could hang high and the other lower then another sm one on the wall next to the sink - can hold a hand towel and other things if needed. Got to be creative. NICE JOB! Never Thought about opening up the wall.

Just make sure that new ledge is solidly installed....if it's that hollow all the way down, and something falls in......you'll never find it again.

Great call. The existing shelf that runs the full length of the back wall was very solid all the way. I filled in the small gap between the 2 wall panels to reinforce and also seal the gap. The pictures don't do it justice. This storage space will be huge for linens and towels. I am going to add a bungee a few inches up to keep them in place. Even my wife was excited lol.

Our bathroom layout is almost identical to yours, just flipped. With four people, we each have our own bar. With the humidity down here in the South, we have to spread the towels out or they would never dry.

Didn't consider putting them above the tub surround. Great idea!

I just went out and looked. I can do that too, and likely WILL!
Agreed, great idea!

Boy I love this forum! That is one of the easiest mods I have seem in a while. Will be picking up a couple of towel bars soon! Thanks for sharing, ModGuy!

How did you attach the bars to the thin walls?

Hit a stud where I could and used hollow wall anchors where I could not. No issues with them since installed 10 years ago.

Love the towel bars! I need more also but my bathroom is a little different. Can someone or the OP post another picture of the shelf that was added? In the posted pictures I looks like that the shelf on the outside of the bathroom keeps going on the other side of the bathroom wall. Please make it clearer for me. Thanks. Jay

I will try and take some more pics tomorrow but yes the shelf traveled behind the bathroom wall. It had a piece of paneling screwed to the shelf to block the view of the unfinished shelf space behind the wall. By lowering the bathroom wall down level to where the existing shelf was, I now have a large storage area for clean folded towels etc. I am going to put some eye hooks in on each side and a bungee cord to keep the towels from falling out while traveling.

This trailer has a storage compartment over the thunder mug, so I made a shelf off the bottom of that to hold towels.......pocket holes in legs work great
