Adding second AC

Has anyone on here ever added a second air conditioner to the front of a camper that wasn't pre wired for it?

We bought our unit with a 30 amp plug as 95% of the camp sites we stay at only have a 30 amp and the typical 20 amp on the pedestal to be plugged into.

My though would be to install a second lower btu high efficiency unit to the front and possibly find a way to fish a power cable down to the basement of the 5th wheel to install a 20 amp plug that could then be ran over to the 20 amp receptacle on the pedestal to supply the front unit and be able keep the rest of the camper the same...

just a thought... would be curious if anyone else has thought of this or done it...

I added a 13.5 unit to my first TT using the same method you are considering. If your trailer has ceiling rafters they should be spaced correctly. You'll have to add something front to back for support. IIRC I used 3/4 plywood by placing a short piece of 2x2 behind it at the correct depth and screwing them to the rafters, if that makes sense. You can then attach the ply to the 2x at each corner. While routing the wiring, I suggest you install an outlet on that circuit that you could use to run a heater on if you camp in the cold season.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the input... Smart thought with the extra outlet too... Biggest issue will be getting the wiring down to the basement. I like the idea of molded conduit if for whatever i can't conceal it well enough through the walls and cabinets...

any other thoughts/input would be awesome!

Don't you have a wardrobe up front?

Be way easier to fish wires forward and into front wardrobe then into basement.
I've got only about 3 foot of ceiling till the wardrobe in my sabre .

Doing the same to mine as soon as I get a low pro a/c .
Cheyenne is looking for a totaled unit with a good low pro for me.

Yeah, that is sort of my plan... will be a combo of fishing to the wardrobe and then down the bare wall in the conduit, under the bed and into the basement...

when you finish yours up make sure you come over and help with mine!

In all honesty though, make sure you take some good pictures...

are you thinking of doing a ducted unit or non?

ducted would require a thermostat mounted else where wouldn't it?

I was leaning towards ducted as well... especially since i have the duct just to the side of the sky light... would also be nice to run front ac if we were inside watching tv or such to help quite it down...

i am also thinking spring time for me... seeing as by the time i get everything lined up and done it'll be cooling back off...

Didn't realize but the Penguin Low profile RV air conditioner is only 3.2" inches shorter then the 13.5k normal a/c @ 12.7"
What is the best price you found on a lo pro?

I actually havent done a ton of looking... i am also possibly going to consider a heat pump unit as my camper doesn't have an electric heater built into it anywhere... would be kind of nice to be able to push electric heat into the unit seeing as it is already paid for...
