Any way to quiet overhead AC?
We have a Wildwood 195BH with an overhead AC unit. It is LOUD! Does anyone know if there's a way to quiet down an AC unit? It's a Dometic.

Short answer...NO!
Long answer....NO!
Nature of the beast. Their all loud, whether in a small trailer or a 32' class c, or a 40' 5th wheel.

Yes, but you won't like the answer
The Atwood 13.5K and 15K BTU A/C's are much quieter than the Dometic. We removed our Dometic 13.5K unit on our Forester MBS - even though it worked fine - and replaced it with a 15K Atwood heat pump. We couldn't hold a conversation at the dinette directly below the ceiling diffuser with the Dometic. Now with the Atwood (even on high) - we can eat and talk without yelling.
The Atwood also draws much less current and the low/med/high speeds actually are different, unlike the low/high of the Dometic.

LOUD... Is amazing how loud it is inside, yet when you go outside, its actually very quite...
I've looked at mine, I believe there is two source of noise:
1) The AC unit seems to vibrate the entire roof, so the roof amplifies the sound.
2) Wind noise, It moves air at very high speed, which translates to noise.
There isn't any way that I can see to quit it down...

Remember, the OP has a 19 foot tt. Nothing installed on that rig, no matter what the brand, is going to be "quiet". Dosen't even have any type of doors to seperate the bedroom section from rest of tt. AC is going to be loud!

Our Crusader has the Quiet version ducted air that does NOT have that grate in the middle of your ceiling with the sliding portion to dump cold air if needed
It is more like a regular central air system - it has two cold air return vents in the ceiling and it is extremely
quiet compared to any other we have had in previous fivers..you can actually watch TV at normal volume levels 😊

Again, the OP has a 19 foot tt, with a non ducted ac unit. It is going to be much louder than a ducted 5th wheel. In a small tt that is basically an open box, even a "quiet" ac unit will still be loud. Big difference between his rig, and a larger 5th wheel, or MH with a ducted ac unit.
Really no way to "quiet" it down. Even spending 6-7-8 hundred dollars to have a "quiet" ac unit installed would not cut down noise that much.

As for the vibration, I would suggest removing the roof cover and inspecting the fan blades for mud dauber nests. Been there, done that.

We have a rooftop heat pump. The roof is a huge sounding board. The compressor's vibrations are amplified by the roof. No way around it other than a basement unit. In 50 years of RVing, we've learned to appreciate the AC drowning oht campsite noises.

Also if you take the cover off of the unit on roof, look at the tubing coming out of the compressor and make sure its not touching/rubbing against any of the sheet metal. Mine was just touching the sheet metal and made a awful noise. I turned the unit off and let it cool down and bent the tubing just a bit 1/8" with my hands and got it off of the sheet metal, made all the difference in the world. I still have the air noise but the vibration noise is gone.

Remove it and install a portable AC... much quieter, way more efficient and can be ran on a 2K generator easily. Only drawback is you must have an accessible window to vent it through.

About 6 months ago someone posted about fabricating a shroud that incorporated some sound deadening material. It got posted also to irv2.com and rv.net. Do a search.

If one was so inclined, could use a shore power compartment and run a portable exhaust hose into it......then when not using, close the flap.......or, JR Products make compartment boxes of various sizes, with doors......bore the hole size, mount the box using butyl tape.

Mine is ducted, but still loud. I expect it will always be that way. As long as it is cold I'm happy! Lol

I can't leave.
I'm in a pull through site with two 100' pine trees in front of me. Can't make 90 degree left turn when leaving. Camper ain't gonna leave fronterds (Southern for frontwards).
I have to live here forever.
