Anyone built a generator "shelf" for rear bumper?

Wildcat travel trailer.

I am very interested in fabricating a platform for the rear bumper for generator storage while underway, maybe a water jug or two.

Has anyone done something similar?

I modified the factory "bike rack" so I have good points to strap my Yeti cooler, a propane tank and my generator, generator not shown in pic below but I took everything to work and customized it to fit perfectly.

If you don't have a "factory" rack, there is a lot of talk on the forum about adding to the frames / bumpers and creating issues if it was not originally designed to haul a load but a lot have done it by hiring a certified welder and adding bracing.

On my trailer it looks like they just welded some rectangular tubing to the frame rails and mounted the rack mounts off of the top of that and claimed 450 lb. capacity, I can get you some better pics of the way it is attached this weekend if you want them.

I'm interested to see others ideas as well. See what works and what doesnt. See good attachment points. I'd like to haul a small generator and fuel outside of the trailer and not in the suv.

As was said- don't rely on the bumper. It doesn't have the carrying capacity for much else except itself. You need to fabricate from the frame out to build out a platform.

There are also the usual caveats of this voiding frame warranties (though, with a 2004- you're past that), ultra-lights not being designed for this and fabricated frames not being designed for the extra load. As with everything- use caution and make your own choices, ultimately - this is a safety thing if that thing hits the pavement behind you going down the road.
