Bike rack

I was wondering if anyone has installed a bike rack on their TT. If so could you post some pics. I'm looking for some way to haul 4 bikes without throwing them in the bed of the truck (which normally is loaded down with plenty of other stuff).

This is not advisable.

I've done it and regret it.

Wow turbo, was this due to the bumper not being able to support the weight of the bike rack? How many bikes was it holding up?

*If* you do it- don't use the bumper. The bumpers are barely strong enough to hold the spare tire (read posts about folks losing their end caps from flexing of bumpers with spares). I also have a friend who had a similar ending as Turbo - they got flagged down because their bikes were dragging down the road one night with 3 or 4 bikes. Sad thing was- he was all proud of it before that.

If you do it, you need to fabricate an entire strengthened hitch assembly. The problem with that, you'll generally void your frame warranty once the welding occurs.

That really sucks turbo. I'm guessing that the bumper is not the best place for a bike rack.

Yep. Your primary options are:

1) On top of the truck on a roof mount bike rack

2) Over top of the propane tanks (either DIY or expensive commercial solutions available)

3) Front-mount hitch on truck + bikes on carrier there

4) Inside of the camper (my 2-3 bikes, toddler trike and stroller ride on our dinette with waterproof sheets between each layer)- there's really no mess to this like people think that there will be

5) With our SUV and pop-up, we were able to hang the bikes from the back of the SUV using a Thule trunk rack. But I'm not sure if that'll work for travel trailers + trucks.

I will be buying one this spring and they are expensive, but last summer we spoke to a couple of people who were quite happy with them.

NOPE!

the only safe way is to have a receiver welded and braced to the frame AND bumper.
but this will void the frame's warranty, if it's still good. most frame manufacturers will void the warranty if mods are made to it that aren't approved by them.

putting bikes on a rack bolted to the bumper, held out and away from the trailer back end, will put way more stress on the bumper's welds, than a spare tire that's right up against the back of the trailer.

yes they are expensive and difficult to find in the U.S.

there's also this company, also in Quebec:

SR 3000 | Support-Rack

a different take on the same concept, also expensive.

All real good ideas ependydad, but wouldnt the over the propane model add a significant amount of weight to the tongue.

I would think so. Most of the weight is going to be transferred to the tongue.

So that might not be a real good idea also then right? The front truck mount sounds like the best bet, too me. Am i wrong in thinking that I wouldnt want to add more weight to the tongue? And where would I find the front mount receiver?

It really all depends on what your tongue weight is, how much your hitch can handle and where you are at with weights on your truck. Having a higher percentage of tongue weight isn't bad- as long as you're not exceeding ratings.

Even the front hitch for the truck is going to add weight to the truck's total weight in relation to it's GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) and, of course, the front axle weights.

It's all a balance.

Here's a link to etrailer.com for front hitches:
Front Mount Trailer Hitch | etrailer.com

You would then need a nice hitch-mounted rack - my recommendation is Thule. They're expensive, of course- but well made.

You may be better off with the bikes in, or on, the truck.

If going with the front mount I would look to possibly drop it down a few inches to provide better sight lines while driving.
I had thought about the front mount, but I am not comfortable with the idea that it may interfere with the headlights, as I need to add 4 bikes.
