Capital Grille Replacement on Rockwood Mini 2509
Took devilvery of our Rockwood Mini 2509 last October. While placing the order in August I found out Rockwood changed / added quite a few things for the 2019 1/2 models.
One was that Rockwood decided that the inside oven was now a mandatory option. No longer can you forgo the oven and choose storage where the oven is located. The biggest disappointment was that the outside kitchen no longer had a two burner stove or the sink which was hooked directly to the plumbing and drained to the gray tank. They replaced these two options with a “Capital Grille”, which is supposed to be able to be used a grill and a stovetop.
Within a week of taking delivery, I replaced the capital grill with an Atwood (56472) DV 30S Stainless Steel Drop in 3-burner cook top which I ordered from Amazon for $179.99. It does not come with a cover, so I had to order one. I ordered the Atwood (56461) DVC3-SLR Stainless Steel Drop in Cover for DV 30S for $96.79 from Amazon as well. There are a few different covers, so make sure you order one that will fit the DV30.
The existing opening for the capital grille is too big for any of the two burners offered by Suburban and Atwood (Dometic). The 3 burner was bigger than the opening, so some cutting was necessary, which was easily done with a jig saw. One thing to keep in mind is that the existing opening is not centered, so measure and adjust accordingly. Also I would recommend installing the stove as far forward as possible. I installed it back a few inches which looks great, but causes the cover to hit the side of the trailer before I can swing out the wind deflectors. I have to release the drawer glides and pull the drawer out an inch or so past the stops, swing out the deflectors, then push the drawer back in until the drawer glide locks engage. Learn from my oversight. It’s not a big deal, but being a perfectionist, it kills me that I did not catch the issue. I have 2” of clearance between the trailer and the stove cover.
I also replaced the screws Rockwood used to mount in the drawer glides for the stove pull out. The factory used 1/2” screws which I felt were under sized. I replaced them with 1” wood screws.
Took me about an hour at most to install both the stove and cover.
I have a brand new never used Capital Grille for sale if anyone needs one.......

Nice mod. Always wondered what the big deal with that grill.

Great choice to replace the grill with a 3-burner stovetop. I would have gone with at least a 2-burner, too. How did you discover they used the short screws? Was it a bit loose right away?

Doing modifications on other trailers as well as this one, has taught me that no matter what manufacture you choose to buy, they all use the bare minimum when it comes to material, including fasteners.
The Rockwood Mini is built pretty well in my opinion, especially compared to some other units I owned, but still not even close to the standards you or I would have if we built them ourselves.
With that being said, the new 3 burner stove is a little heavier than the Capital Grille I replaced. I pulled out a screw to ensure myself the glides where anchored well and that they could support the additioal weight of the 3 burner and a large pot of water. Holding true to past experience, it wasn’t. Honestly, I don’t how they expected the 1/2” screws to hold over time with the lighter Capital Grill that was originally installed.

gas hook-up
What about the gas hook-up? Any mods needed, fittings, conversions, hose?

Nice mod. Thinking hard about doing this myself. I can't see the point of this grill, when there's the gas grill that mounts on the rail just to the right of the kitchen. I'd much rather have a 2 or 3 burner stove for my cast iron skillets to go on.

I also hated the capital grill and added a sink and 2 burner cooktop back. I wish the factory never took it out in the first place.

Pros and Cons of Capital Grille?
I am starting my shopping for the 2509s. I was just wondering if most people prefer a traditional cooktop or the Capital Grille? Maybe I am missing something, but just wondering why people don't like the Capital Grille?

It’s a flimsy poorly made piece of junk. Lid broke opening it once and the splash guards never would stay in place. Worst mistake this model ever had was removing the sink and putting in that garbage.

I would like to do this 2 burner / Sink modification also. But was wondering how I would get the drain water back into the grey water tank? Were you able to do that?

All the plumbing is back there ready to go. Bother supply lines and drain run from the kitchen to the bathroom from the back of the wall

So just got our 2891 bunk house with the crappy grill and am very interested in doing this conversion. How was the gas connection and is the cover mandatory or did you do it to just offer the wind break? Thanks for the input. Scott

Yes the opening has to be cut bigger. Also supply lines, drain and gas line hookups.

Nice mod from the Capital pos grill. I am thinking of doing the mod but with a Dometic 50210. I'm going to use the same cover. My question is that the Dometic says I need an 11 wc regulator. I'm thinking not because all I'm doing it basically swapping out grills. Am I correct ?
