Counter Extension - My Take

Have the Rockwood 2702 and wanted a "permanent" solution for my counter extension. Like many I didn't have a center wood bar to fasten to, so this is how it went down in case it helps others. I know there are a handful of counter extension posts already, but hopefully this is still helpful and not redundant.

Started here:

And here (minus the big bracket):

Went to this on the extension:

And this with brackets folded in:

This is how I worked the existing counter space:

Wife said I should have cleared all the "stuff" out for the pics, but just didn't want to bother.

The brackets are weight rated to 550lbs as a pair, but pretty sure if my 5 year old or 2 year old decides to hang from it it may go. Let's hope we don't test that. Goal was to get it full time mounted and be able to drop the leg as I think my kids will kick that out of place accidentally more than it will help support. Besides some play in the brackets themselves, feels pretty sturdy.

I called the dealer I bought the trailer from and asked if they had any scrap around. I brought a piece down with me from inside a cabinet to match to. They went back and cut me off a big section. And gave me some sort-of matching seam tape to go with it. Surprisingly, they didn't charge me for anything.

x2 on the looks good. I wish mine didn't have drawers in the end of cabinet or I'd do it to! Nice job

I bought them on Amazon. Here is the link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There were a lot of options and I'm not entirely sure how I ended on these except they were an Amazon Choice.

I had same thoughts with my Flagstaff 29 RKWS. I replaced the slot hinges with two heavy duty hinges swing hinges from a cabinet builder .Mounted them in the same location as the slot ones. Them I affixed two rubber stoppers on the other end so the extension would not slam against the cabinet when towing. For added safety also have a small bungy type cord that goes over the shelf when towing.

I have always wanted to do this but was worried about the look. You might just have given me the insight and courage to do it. Thanks..

GREAT mod! My wife has been complaining about lack of counter space in our SOB. I'm going to show her this - it may save me from buying her a new camper so she gets that space!

We're out for the first time in the camper on a test run. We've had the counter up and down a number of different times already on day 1. So nice to be able to just fold down and pop up so quickly.

Is the top ceramic?
Was it already rebated/sculptured to have a lip around the edge, of the right depth for the timber?

The extension came with the trailer. Same material, correan or something like that, as the main counter. Yes to being formed and having wood on the bottom already.

Interesting, mainly because I have yet to come up with a good storage solution in our 2706 for the counter extension. So far I just place it on the floor of the bedroom during transit. But then it doesn't have a place while not in use... Anyone find a good place to store the counter ext inside while camping? Thanks

I had thought to go under the bed with it. This mod is one of my favorites though. We don't have to leave it up and it is always ready. We take it up and down many times per day when camping.

Thanks for the link to the brackets. Working on it today. Think though I'd like to keep the leg if I possible. The extension is very handy, but our gripe too is where to store it. Kind of a PIA to set up and take down.
