Electrical Question (with photo)

All,

My wife and I just purchased a motor home (Forest River 3100SS) and I was looking in the battery compartment and have a newbie question.

In the attached picture, I have a yellow arrow pointing at what looks like some sort of rusty modulator (?). I'd like to replace it but I don't know for sure what it is. I have a dual battery 12v system.

First, what is it?
Second, can (or should) I replace it with a shunt?

Thanks for your feedback.

That's a Relay (solenoid).

This is the new style.

Is it maybe for your Generator starting circuit?

Looks like it may be the solenoid to enable you to jump the chassis with the coach batteries if the coach batteries are weak.

Generator Starting

I never thought of the generator starting circuit. That makes sense.

I'll probably take it off and see if I can get a model number or some relevant information to replace it.

I thought about building a battery box to protect that area.

Thanks for the input guys!

If you go to an auto parts store(Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Advance Auto). It should be Wells part #F496. It is a started solenoid for a older ford.
