Hide-A-Bed sloped

Removed two of the spacers on each side...sets better on the floor, since no one has ever slept on the bed, cannot tell or have experience until someone does, oh yes the cat...he could sleep on anything though, not a good judge...April we will have a two legged house guest, ginny pig..

In conclusion, I agree. Not a simple mechanical fix anyway.

I looked at the suggestion Crusader posted about moving the board under the "Typar" (assuming that's the black cloth). I think I see what is being suggested. There are a couple of things wrong with that approach. First, it's a fairly major change that I wouldn't want to do to something that is under warranty. Second, as he himself suggested, this is going to raise the back of the couch seat, making the couch uncomfortable.

Here's what I have done.

I made the "wedge" that I suggested in my original post. When I put a level to that slope I discovered that it was off by 2-5/8" (instead of the 4-5 I originally thought). The parts for the wedge are:
- Two 3/16" hardboard (think pegboard without the holes) pieces that are 58" by 30".
- Two pieces of white wood that are 3/4" by 58". The first one I made 2-5/8" wide and the second is half that 1-5/16"). These need to have a 2.5 degree slope on each edge.
- 24 each #10 1-1/4" wood screws.
- 24 each #12 finishing washers (little cup-like things).
- Duct tape (of course).

Just put the wider board at one edge of the two hardboard pieces and the narrower board halfway between that wide board and the "point" of the wedge. I put 6 screws with washers into each board on each side (offsetting them a bit from side to side so they didn't split the wood). I then put duct tape over all of the screws to prevent any rough edges from tearing cloth or the air mattress. Pictures at the end.

This fixes the sloped bed problem. Then I tried closing up the couch with that wedge in there. This is somewhat subjective, but I definitely felt like the couch was trying to throw me off the front. The couch needs that back slope to feel comfortable. The manufacturer should have achieved that slope by taking padding out of the cushions instead of destroying the usefulness of the bed!

I find that I can move the couch out about an inch from the wall and the wedge will store behind it (point down) just beautifully.

The down-side is that the beast weighs 30 pounds. I would love to find a wedge of non-collapsing foam that wouldn't squeak.

I really hope that PrimeTime and other manufacturers using this couch will pressure the company that makes it to "do it right", cause its not close to right now.

We have the same problem with the couch bed in our Sanibel. I have tried to get Prime Time to replace the couch with one that makes a really flat bed. Roger at Prime Time told me to let the dealership "fix" the couch. I did and they took the piece of felt off (tearing the cloth) put a 1 inch board on the back of the couch. They then used a staple gun (very liberly) to reattach the torn cloth. We put the bed out again and still the head of the bed is much lower than the center of the bed, making sleep almost impossible. I too did the makeshift corrections using some pillows under the head end of the bed which helped but I just do not believe that conusmers should have to make wedges....pillows or any other fix when we spend as much as we do for our trailers.
