How do I Modify Smoke Hollow 205 Grill

We own a Smoke Hollow 205 grill and I'd like to modify so it can work on the low pressure RV propane rather than the 1 lb propane tanks. Unfortunately this grill has a combo regulator/flame adjuster, so I can't just take the regulator off without also removing the way to adjust the flame. Has anyone done this?

Thanks

I don't think there is a lot you can do. I looked into using a high pressure LP tee and by the time I added up all the fittings and hoses, it was cheaper to by one with a removable regulator...~ 99.00 at Home Depot or Lowe's

While converting to low pressure might not be an option on your particular grill, if all you are wanting to do is get rid of carrying 1 Lb. bottles, simply tap into the high pressure side of the on-board tank(s) with something like the Extend-a-Stay adapter at your R/V tank.

Here's a video of someone who added one to a motorhome but the process would be the same for a TT/5th wheel. (see below)

Here is another...

Camco also makes a low pressure adapter WITH flame control that fits some grills. If this would screw into your grill, it's an easy way to use LOW pressure. It is also available in a kit which includes a hose.

Camco Control Valve for Low Pressure

One might get one of these and remove the adapter from the regulator and adapt/braze the fitting to a quick disconnect fitting.

Unfortunately, this is the exact all in one regulator/gas adjustment that is on the grill mow.

https://www.appliancefactoryparts.co...494535/255961/

I am thinking about unscrewing the nipple (the brass part in the picture of the regulator) that attaches into the grill, from the regulator assembly and attach a propane quick connect fitting to it (removing the regulator and gas control knob). Then I'd use the hose shown below to connect the grill to my RV propane port. I'm hoping that I could use shut-off valve on the hose to control the gas flow to the grill. It should work provided that I can actually control the gas flow to grill using the hose shut off valve. My fear is that the valve is either off or on, with little in between.

https://www.amazon.com/DOZYANT-Press...gateway&sr=8-3

I'd love to be able to use the Camco Control Valve for Low Pressure (pic show in a previous post), but I don't know if it comes apart. I'd have to remove the gas outlet fitting from the Camco valve and replace it with the one already on the Smoke Hollow grill, but I don't know if the Camco outlet fitting is even removable. If it is I don't know if the threads will match or if I could adapt them.

I would bet a $1 that this one is 1/8" NPT...

https://www.appliancefactoryparts.co...494535/255961/

many regulators I have messed with are. There would still be some "adapting" if it is. A 1/4 x 1/8" reducing nipple and a FPT low pressure quick connect male adapter.

So... I have the Camco Low Pressure flame control I referenced earlier. I went out and took the nut off of it and it appears the gas nipple does unscrew.

And like Iwannacamp, I'd bet too it is 1/8". I didn't unscrew the gas nipple but from looking at the photos and what I have in front of me, I'd think you could unscrew the gas nipple/connector nut from your regulator/flame adjuster and insert it into the Camco one.

Have you tried contacting their customer service? I know with couple different grill companies that I have dealt with, they have a low pressure adapter, but it's not listed on their website or in any documentation. Camp Chef was one.

I bought a Smoke Hollow gas grill less than a year ago that was advertised as being 100% stainless steel. Wrong! Within 6 months of use it became clear that this was not made of stainless steel. There was corrosion everywhere, so I tossed it in the trash. I hope you have better luck with yours.

I did it and it worked but ultimately I was unhappy with the 205 because it only has one valve to run the entire grill. I wanted two or three sections so I ended up buying another SH product that is a Grill/Smoker.

That said, this is how I did it. You have to remove the regulator which in this case doubles as the valve. Then you need a hose with fittings to connect to your external propane but Im assuming you already have that.

On the grill end of the hose you will need first a 3/8" needle valve to regulate the flow of gas from the hose (which is already low pressure).

https://www.grainger.com/product/5WL...g!309576472933!

Then you will need a 3/8" brass elbow with two male ends.

https://www.amazon.com/Anderson-Meta...J0QD5YMAX33AV2

One of the ends will screw onto the needle valve. The other end is small enough that you can use some JB Weld and connect the supply end of the orifice tube from the grill to that other end of the elbow.

It may sound a little Rube Goldberg but it is a VERY low pressure and it works just fine at least it did for me.

That is all there is to it.

Good Luck, Let me now how it goes for you.

Yep...that's the part that needs to removed and disassembled. The regulator needs to be tossed and the brass nipple end needs to be reused somehow. I need to keep the nipple so the gas reaches far enough inside the grill. I took mine apart and the threads are very tiny. I took the part to the hardware store to see if I could match the thread size, but I couldn't find anything that fit.

Look at my post #11 above. That brass nipple (gas orifice) is what needs to be JB Welded to the brass elbow.

I went everywhere looking for a fitting to screw it into but nobody, but NOBODY had anything.

That brass nipple makes a very small amount of JB Weld needed. It never leaked on me.
