How to beat “The Fuzz”

While getting the trailer ready for a 2 week outing, I ran into this, the dreaded fuzz. The battery box was barely held in with these 2 screws.

What I used to fix it...

Rustoleum Primer, and Bed Liner, 1/4” rubber matt, and some scrap Nomex honeycomb.

Prep...

Wire brushed the fuzzy, corroded points, and ran the DA sander over the mounting plate with an 80 grit pad.

The box...

Needed more surface area to clamp on the box itself, so rather then just bolt heads I used 1/4” stainless fender washers on the top and bottom. I had to cut slots in the bottom of the box to accommodate the large washers.

Our dealer didn't even bother using screws with our battery box. All they used was a friction strap and that wasn't even installed correctly. First thing I did was drill holes to mount it with bolts and nuts, painted all the holes/hardware and added a couple of drainage holes to keep it dry.

Nice job by the way.

Finishing it up...

Pictures show the stainless hardware, the freshly coated mounting plate, and the finished box.

My goal was to insulate the battery from the frame and make the whole thing more secure. Maybe this is why the fuse on my truck that controls the battery charging blew. Regardless, it’s a far cry from how the dealer installed the battery and much more road worthy. Hope some of my ideas help somebody down the road, enjoy.
