How to install a water by-pass valve on surburban water heater?

I need to install a by-pass valve on our surburban sw6d water heater for winterizing purposes. Where can I get this information?

Should be on the back of the unit already. Mine has a black plastic cover that pops out and it's my arm length in. Took a flashlight and looking to find it.

Not sure of the age of yours if it has it. If newer unit should have to find how to get to the back of the heater.
