how about a magnet cabinet door latch mounted to the door and glue the strike pad to the awning in the area the two meet

might work, might not, it is a weird set up

hmm that might work if the door is metallic. i know mine isnt. tried to put magnets up to hold a blind.

you would have to attach the magnet and stike plate ( some kind of stong glue or small sheet metal screws )

Only problem I see with magnets is rust, and the stains rust make.

you maybe right on the rust, i will look at home depot the next time i am there, it seems to me that there maybe some kind of plastic or rubber type cabinet door holder, i think it is like a small shaft with a ball on the end that would stick inside a rubber thing, sorry i dont have the right names for it

You need an Angled Door Holder. You would need to mount it clode to the door edge, but it should work.
