I have Awning Poles!
Thanks to an awesome forum member  I now have awning hold down poles. A pair of brackets showed up the other day and I installed them today. I bought poles at Home Depot. They aren't the greatest but they'll do for now. Easy project for anyone thinking about doing it. I need to trim them a bit so I can open the basement hatch while the awning is in, I just didn't have anything with me to cut it.
So now I'm wondering if I NEED deflappers. Is the purpose of those to help keep the awning from getting torn off the camper?

Well..........IMO...the best way to keep an awning from being ripped off your trailer...if it's getting windy, or possible storm coming...just put the awning away. Neighbor earned his awning pilot's license last year when sudden storm came up and before he got it unlocked to put away...he was laying 60' across the road...still holding the rail from awning. I don't trust tie down ropes either. I had to rebuild an awning once...(not due to wind)...and I've gotten a little gun shy to anything that might cause damage.

I know that no matter what you do, the awning needs to come in during storms and heavy winds. I just want to be able to leave it out on breezy days and be able to leave the CG for a bit and not worry about the thing getting shredded.

Sounds like you're good to go. I use them with great success... with poles I made using PVC conduit from H.D.

They look good and are one of the best mods you can do. I got mine from Trubs poles and old coot brackets and have not had a problem with my awning in wind or rain. I use ratchet straps and ground anchors to keep things tight. You will love them the more you use them.

How does that work? I find the power awning is much less able to handle any wind than the old manual pull out types.

Here are some examples. With the poles, ratchet straps and ground anchors, the power awning are just about as good as the old manual and a lot easier to deploy and retract.

I definitely need this! I've hated the automatic awning on my Windjammer simply because it can't be left out even it a light breeze. Like you, Kevinwak, I preferred the manual awning on my previous camper. It didn't matter that it took 3 or 4 minutes to put up or take down. Since I could lock it in place I didn't have to put it in and out 6 times a day...

Doesn't the wind still get under the awning and billow it's? With the locking knobs, why does it make such a racket in the wind, without the poles?

It tries to fold the arms at their pivot points. The poles with straps and ground anchors stop it from doing that.

Nice-looking setup. I would be tempted to make the pole by the least-used door shorter so that the awning would be tilted lower on that end for drainage in case of rain. I'd choose the least-used door because our doors scrape the awning when one end is lower than the other.
Could you post a close-up picture of the pivot/hook mechanism and another of the catch mechanism for securing the pole while traveling?

The problem I have with awning tie downs is the stress that is put on the awning attachment at the RV. I have poles etc. to tie it down, but have decided not to use them.

Your loss as OC said some will buy as they are a good investment. I love mine and using the claw to attached the straps makes for a good secure awning. Later RJD
