Improve radio reception in remote areas

Just thought I'd add a little tip...I frequently dry camp at Elkmont campground in the GSMNP. Since I can only pickup one radio station I thought I try something to improve that. I ordered a Motorola to F connector and connected my TV antenna to the radio. Since the TV antenna is directional and has an amplifier I can now get about a dozen stations. Anyone with the same problem might want to try this. I ordered the cable from http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/28-2145 but I think you can get it from Radio Shack as well.

That's a great idea. Thanks.

BTW, I've camped there in a tent for 25 years. Thinking of bring the trailer this year. One of my camping buddies just told me earlier tonight that there is no dump station in Elkmont. Nearest one at Sugarlands visitor center. Is that true?

The problem with MCM is that they charge $8 shipping on a $2 cable.

That's correct...up the hill and down, about 5 minutes away.

That price is correct but I chose to do that rather than drive to Radio Shack and pay $12.

Good point. I have one just a mile or so away- unfortunately, their staff isn't the geekly type any more. I can't just take a picture in and ask, "Do you have this?".

That seems to be the norm for us Canadians. Case in point, I was looking at getting a $40 propane hose. The breakdown was something like:

Goods: $40.00
Tax: $3.xx
Shipping: $11.xx
Duty: $34.xx
Shipping: $57.xx

Total: $147.xx

(Yes, they charged shipping twice. Once to ship to warehouse that in turn shipped across the border)

Holy mackerel, Kaadk! I'm in the US and feel like $8 is excessive- but maybe I'll just quiet my word hole after seeing your $100+ charges for shipping-related festivities. Yowza.

Yeah, needless to say I didn't go through with that purchase. I found a US based address I can ship to instead.

...and to cross the border to pickup your parcel at the US address, the passport will cost you $120 although that's once every 5 years. If you're in a hurry they can expedite it for you, for an additional $110.

I'm at least 2 hours from the U.S. border in either direction (east or west - I'm just east of Toronto), so when I add in my fuel and wear & tear costs it had better be a huge savings to make it worth the trip to the border.

Too bad many of these stores don't ship by USPS (when they do ship to Canada). It's much cheaper.
