Installing composting toilet

We have a 2016 Cedar Creek Silverback 33IK, we will be fulltimers in 16 more days. DW wants to swap out the existing toilet for a composting toilet.

Install looks to be fairly straight forward, not much too them. Anybody installed one have any thoughts on it?

We plan on getting the Natures Head toilet.

My wife is making noises that she would like one.

I don't care what you say -- they stink! I guess those who use them get used to the stench and don't notice it after a while. Me -- I can smell it as soon as the door opens on a unit with one.

Geee.... What a Great idea !!

Imagine all the storage space you would get by removing the black tank !

Why not just get a large pan and use 'Kitty-Litter' ?

Use the space to install a unit to recycle the grey water also and remove those tanks also.

traysurfer, as you can tell- you'll not get much useful information on these. The people who have installed them seem to love them. I have only been in one unit where it was added and that was a boondocker's dream Airstream (the guy completely rebuild everything from the frame up). That thing was amazing. For what it's worth, I didn't notice a smell nor would I have known it was a composting toilet if it wasn't for someone mentioning it.

I'm fulltiming (with my wife and 2 kids) also. I am curious as to the same that Old Coot asked - what are the benefits to going to one? What do you do with the compost when it's full?

I simply don't understand the composting toilet. How often do you have to dump the so-called compost and a bigger question I have is where do you dump it??

I had never heard of a composting toilet, but it seems like a unique idea.

Composting Toilet: What is it and Why you need one

I had a recirculating toilet in my Trailmanor, and I thought that worked great, but some owners hated them.

Eliminate your reliance on a black water tank.

I'm not buying or selling, but the thought of not worrying about how much you use the toilet and where can you dump, is what attracts most people.

If you always camp with full hook ups, then I agree, why bother.

On the other hand, if you are like us and camp at a lot of Michigan State parks, where you have water and electric, but no sewer? It severely limits how often you can use the toilet in the rig.

Now add (6) grand kids into the mix. You can imagine that the black tank fills quickly.

Once again, not buying or selling.

Thanks everyone for the replies, and laughs.

Thought is to reduce the amount of times we have to go find a dump station and less worry about filling up black tank and being forced to leave where we are at.

I also like the idea of getting extra grey water capacity by combining the black tank with the other grey tanks.

As we get closer to our fulltime date, the plan as of now is to boondock for about a week, then pop into a park with hookups for a night or two to do laundry and whatnot. So I guess it wont be a huge deal as most parks have either dump stations or sewer.

DW after thinking about it more put it down a bit lower on the list of stuff she wants (at least till she changes her mind again).

Are you two just a couple full timing? If so, most black tanks will last you quite a while (like greater than a week) before needing dumped. Even with my family of 4- our black tank lasts us 6 days before needing dumped.

The composting toilet separates liquid waste from solid waste. The way so many RVers freak out at the thought of dumping gray water on the ground, I can’t imagine that dumping your pee on the ground would be acceptable anywhere, especially state parks.

Also, according to the Wynns you can put the solid compost in the trash or in a compost pile. I can’t recall ever seeing a compost pile at any campground. And if you are going to throw this so called compost in the trash, then you might as well save yourself some money and buy the bumper dumper.

I'll stick with my black tank thank you very much.

Hey Pine Tree,I think that leaving the Bumper Dumper on the back of our Rvs would lessen the Bumper Humpers getting so close? Youroo!!

That must be the deluxe model.... The first one I saw used corn husks instead of TP, and had no bucket.....

Install the composting toilet and come back in a year with a report. Inquiring minds want to know.

I'll stick with my black tank thank you very much.
