My understanding was that the fan is designed to circulate air throughout the fridge avoiding "hot-spots." The added benefit is keeping ice off the cooling fins. BTW, try to keep the sun off the side of your rig where the fridge is located... Big difference in cooling efficiency.

I have noticed that our frig is about 8 degrees colder with the fan. We are close to freezing most of the time. Of course, it is just the two of us so we don't have kids opening the door a hundred times a day.
