looking at LED tail lights. how do it know what series lights i have (#84/86???)

i am looking to put some LED tails lights on my rig. these appear to be a simple solution LED Tail Light Upgrade Kits for Bargman 84/86 Series - Manufactured by BARGMAN . however, i am not sure how to tell what "series" lights i have right now. does anyone know how to figure this out? i cannot find any markings on my current, OEM lights.

Did you pull one of the bulbs out and look at it? If it is a dual filament bayonett bulb it could be an 1157.

Here is a link to help you identify the bulbs.

Why don't you just order the replacement LED bulb? This is an easy fix.

1157 or 1156 bulb replacement LED*
Perfect low cost LED upgrade for Stop, Turn, Tail light applications, or park/turn applications.
*Notes for motor vehicle applications:
If LEDs of this style are being used behind a colored lens, the LED color must match the lens color.
ANY color LED can be used behind a clear lense, but if a colored lens is on your lights, the LED color needs to match the lens color.
Don't use a WHITE LED behind a colored lens because the white LEDs will not show up sufficiently through the colored lens.

1157 model
Two Function: For Stop/Turn, Tail light applications, double contact base.

See hints and tips for info on vehicle flashers and LED lights

Two contact base

RED
p/n:1157-R
$12.95

I looked at the LEDs you linked to. They are BULB replacements.

You need to identify the base of your BULB to determine what base you need to order with your red LED board.

Having struggled with mounting LED boards in the existing fixtures I can tell you that you will be wasting your money with this mod. However if you insist on trying here is how I mounted my LED boards in my interior light fixtures.

I used extreme duty velcro pile on the fixture and zip tied the extreme duty hook side to the LED pad.

i like the look of the big LED light assemblies with multiple little leds....not just a bulb. i might just get the complete assembly and take the old ones off.... and then of course get led clearance lights for the top, rear as well. it just wouldnt match with leds on the bottom but none on the top

Then you will need to buy a complete assembly. The ones you linked to will be invisible behind your existing red lens.

Remember you MUST buy the correct color LEDs for the color lens you are replacing. Clearance lights require YELLOW LEDs.

If you want to SEE the individual LEDs you will most likely need to buy a specific assembly that is designed to do that.

Here is what I did...
Changed the tail lights to Grote LED units. Also did all the marker lights (Grote) as well. License plate light is a Truck Lite unit. It's amber because I could not get the clear version of that light at that time as they had only just been released into the market and I couldn't wait for one. What is really nice is that I have found the LED lights to be FAR more visible in the rain and at night.

i tossed around the idea of doing something similar to what you did. even though it means using a completely different light assembly, i think i would still like it better than the OEM housings. either way i do it, i want to use a clear lens lamp assembly like i have on my atv. it is clear/chrome looking with bright red LEDs.

I would check with DMV North Dakota before I spent a dime.

If you buy the DoT approved ones you know you are safe from tickets and such.

Sorry,

Thought you just wanted LED bulbs as that is what I assumed from your link. You are just going to have to do some research and find something that is about the same size and retro fit them to your unit like has been mentioned to you. Lots of places sell LED light assy's. Here in Canada, Princess Auto sells a bunch of different ones. So I imagine places like Harbor Freight or Auto Zone probably sell what you want. You could also try and contact FR and see if they would tell you who manfacturers their light assy's.

Yeah, do your research on the lights. Go to the Grote website, or the Truck Lite website. Lots of good info there. I got the part numbers of the lights I wanted, then went down to the local truck body builder (cube vans, work trailers, etc.) parts department and they had everything in stock, much cheaper than what I could get over the counter at parts stores.
