A buddy of mine took the idea from the Slatmat and made his own out of 2x2 deck balusters and 2 pieces of rope. To keep the slats spaced out, he knotted the rope 3 times. Looks pretty snazzy and still rolls up nicely.

I like that rope idea, instead of dowels....time for some re-engineering

I'm sure he had less than $15-$20 into it (he's a cheap guy). His biggest expense was likely the balusters, though I'd be surprised if he didn't wait for a sale or coupon.

We got a Clean Machine Mat for $15 that picks up a ton of dirt.
