Making wheel well stronger.
With the tires that blow. I was wondering. Has anyone done something to cover the wood with metal or plastic to protect it in the event a tire blows? I have a few ideas but I am sure someone has already done it. Pics and advice would be great.

I was thinking about Trex tongue and groove deck board and PVC board from Loews. There are some videos about bending composite board on You-Tube, if it works for you please let the rest of us know. My thought was to frame the plastic liners from inside the unit.

I think someone here installed utility trailer fenders in the wheel wells.

I used some 1/4" thick aluminum to reinforce mine and to make sure water from the tires didn't get in through the lower corner slide seals. Trying to find some pics but apparently no longer have them.

Right now my plan is it use 18 ga steel with something under it to seal it. Then rhino line over the top of it so it does not rust. In my mind the biggest problem is how to attach it to the camper? Any thoughts?

How about installing fenders over the tires attached to the under side of the RV?

Armor from a Sherman tank comes to mind. Those blowouts can be extremely destructive.
Think a heavier metal inner liner would be a good start, but still won't protect outside trim that takes a beating.

If you ever seen the damage a flailing tire tread does, you will realize that you could stuff 200 pounds of plate steel up in each wheel well, and there's a 50-50 shot that it would simply chew it up and spit it out before destroying your camper.
There are tremendous forces involved. I could show you pics of whats left of my fender/light mounts on my utility trailer after a tire tread separation.

Even with the strongest materials, you will just slightly reduce the damage. You can't contain it all. Best money spent is on the best tires you can afford and you will be much less likely to have to worry about tire damage.

I know what a tire can do. The outside skirting when it comes to a blowout does not matter. No way to protect it. But my goal is to protect the floor so we do not have a huge hole in the camper. No need to talk bad about the idea. I am just wanting to know if anyone has tried anything and how it worked or did not work.

I think your 18ga is on the right track. Attaching it ? not sure how many similarities there are with the wheel wells on different trailers. One factor is not having an edge exposed that the tread could grab hold of and tear away.

A fab shop could roll/bend/form one for you. I would talk/find one to do it, schedule and take the RV to them. It would prolly have to be fit. One might use some urethane type roof sealant to seal to well.

One thing is for sure not matter what I do. In the event I do have a blowout there will be damage. Just trying to keep from ruining a trip because there is a 1 or 2 ft hole in my floor. In a worst case.

Not talking bad. Just pointing out that it's a lot of work for little or no protection. OR... If you manage to get enough protection, it will only be because you seriously increased the weight of your rig.
If there was a simple solution to this issue, you can bet your bippy that 12 different people would be selling them online. But, carry on and let us know how it works if/when you have a blowout. Pics preferably...

My wheel wells are the underside of my bump outs. I added ~18" of sheet steel to protect them when retracted The only parts at now risk is the extension mechanism and the fender fascia (that is just a decorative bolt on).

Invest in a Tire Pressure Monitor System. You'll know the second your tire pressure drops under a predetermined point which should allow you to stop before all the damage occurs.

Used 18 Gage galvanized sheet metal and # 10 1" long sheet metal screws. Glued and calked screw holes and edge with Gorilla glue to hold and prevent water intrusion.

I agree!! I would put my $$$ on the "best" tires available...That is what I did!!!....It is the outside trim that also takes the beating..cannot have armor sides and fender trim!!

I already have a tst brand tpms from my last camper. Love it. At some point I am going to put Goodyear endurance on. Not big on Goodyear but not much choice in the 15 inch range.
