I was trying to think of negatives or reasons not to.
No reason not to. Trucks are just a little tall to try and get the bikes up and on there- makes it a bit of a hassle. Otherwise, cost of a good rack will put you into .

The bike rack I built was only about 18" from the from of the nose cone to the last bike and would hold 4 bikes. Took a bit of a different approach in hanging. Click image for larger version

Do you have any pictures or make/model if the base rack?

I completely designed and built the rack (which I still have, but don't use). I found some better pictures.

The hangers were from a Swagman rack

I've considered this option, too. I already have some Yakima Raptor Aero bike holders. The bikes wouldn't be any higher than a 5er and you could load them from the truck bed but it would likely take 2 people to secure them. Buying the Yakima rooftop Q Towers and bars would be almost Cdn$500 so for now I'll leave them in the truck bed.

I looked at some of the options people suggested for a roof rack and wow they sure are proud of their product.
Not sure I want to invest that kind of money on the roof if you know what I mean.
The pictures shown for the pin box racks seems to be a very do-able option.

ANYBODY HAVE A PIN BOX BIKE RACK THEY WANT TO RELEASE? PM ME!

I can probably help you out. I'll send you another PM. I thought I may keep it, but really I have no reason.
