Open cubby under couch

2008 Wildwood 34’ the cubby for outside storage is open under our futon. No 1 why is it open. No 2 can we close it up not only does ac get out heat does too and bugs and rodines can get in.
We also want to replace futon with recliners.

I had an old 1978 Coachman TT that one of the outside cubbies could also be accessed through one of the dinette seats.

Absolutely loved that feature and wish they still came that way.

Owned that thing for 15 years and never once had a rodent or a bug infestation through there.
