Queen Rv mattress to Residential pillow top
We changed out our Rv queen mattress to a residential pillow top mattress. I could carry the rv queen with one hand it was so light. It took the wife and I to carry the residential queen in. Granted the residential was about 3-4 inches longer but it still gave us lots of room at the foot of the bed. The problem we did have was the shocks under the bed would no longer hold the mattress up while we pack things under the bed. After some research I found out the shock is a 20" 80lbs shock. So I looked around and found a direct replacement that was 150lbs. It worked like a charm and it was only 30 for both shocks. Now it holds up the residential pillow top and lets us get things out or put things under the bed.

I also upgraded to the "full" queen mattress. But I used a sleep number so it is light enough that the shocks still worked.
Is your mattress stiff enough that it doesn't hang down where it is not supported?
I added 6" of plywood under mine to support the full length
(once the hatch is closed then the mattress barely sticks past the wood)

Lenny;
Can you tell me where you got the heavier duty shock. We are using the stock mattress with a heavy down featherbed, which is great for sleeping, but just ripped out the hinges and pulled the shocks out. Thanks.

Our Columbus several years ago came with a Serta Trump Series. After our first camping trip on that we went to the mattress store and bought one for home.

I bought mine at newegg. I deal with them for computer parts and when it pulled up for the shocks I pulled the trigger. They come in a pair and for 30.00.

One last quick question. Are the mounting brackets compatible, i.e. I only need to replace the struts?

That's all I did, just get the same length. I think the 20" worked for me. They will not compress easily by hand, just open the bed, remove the old, install the new without compression and close the bed. Easy Peasy..

We replaced our mattress with a regular queen size memory foam mattress and it sleeps just like our stick house mattress (also memory foam). I wasn't sure we were going to keep it at first so our bed extension was meant to be temporary - just for one trip. Then the fur balls decided it was the perfect spot for them so now I have to make the temporary fix permanent (a little stain and replace the cut down table leg). I'll also be adding the heavy duty lift gate rods at some point. Gotta love this forum!

Success! The dealer did a remote warranty service call at our storage site. He beefed up the lumber (he has seen a ton of these platform and shock failures and came prepared) and the hinge support. The 120# shocks snapped on to the existing mounts, do it was a direct replacement. Works beautifully. If anything, it takes a bit more pressure to close it, but that is expected. But no more using my head as a support while I grab stuff from under the bed. Thanks to all.

We had the Trump in our Trilogy and loved it. We just took possession of our Cedarcreek and were worried about the mattress - a Serta Bellagio. It is totally as comfortable as the Trump. Both equal good nights sleep.

I knew Trump was just a name but it's good to know. A king is great but we sleep on a queen at home and I'm thinking of getting a queen for the camper. It would give us 8 inches more per side, our king is not a true king, 76in by 80in, a standard king is 80 by 80
