Rack on back of camper

We have a 2017 Puma 5th wheel that came with a rack on the back. It carries the spare tire and also has a sticker on it that says 225 pound limit. Does anyone know if that includes the spare? I am trying to find a way to carry my handicap scooter with us and I could modify the rack enough to fit the scooter but, if it is so limited in capacity I will have to look for another solution.

IMO, you will probably need to have a special rack made that attaches to the camper frame.

Thanks, that is probably what I will end up doing, I just was wondering. My scooter weighs 140 pounds with the batteries in it, if the batteries are out it is about 100 pounds so I thought maybe it would be an option.
thanks again,
John

What if you move the spare under the camper, sounds like margin would be good then

I could do that, but, I have limited mobility (6 back surgeries) and it is very difficult for me to get down on my knees or crawl. Sucks getting old and fat.

Spare in Truck

I'm facing trying to put a bike rack on a V Lite 30WFKSS listed below. The rack I have was used one time on a heavier trailer and was designed for bumper use on an RV. Sadly, I was not aware of the alleged light frame on this trailer or would not have bought it.

After some bumper beefing up, I think I'll lighten the rear by putting the spare in the truck. I've only had two back surgeries so understand the dilemma.

We just went through that exercise. We were pretty much told that the FR bumpers are so flimsy that even the spare tire can be an overload. Since we have a bumper pull TT we can either disassemble it and put the parts in the TT or we have a ramp to drive it up into the truck. That adds to my payload issue with the truck.

I'd suggest working with someone who knows RVs well to add a reinforced bumper to your 5er - if that is even possible. Put your spare in the truck bed. Alternatively, depending on the scooter, disassemble it and carry it in the truck. Mine breaks down in about 2 - 3 minutes.

How difficult is it to take the battery out after the scooter is up on the rack? Carry the battery in the back of your truck and the scooter and spare tire on the rear rack.

Just a question. How much does the spare tire and wheel weigh? If the rack capacity is 225, and the scooter, with battery, is 140#, that still leaves 85# of capacity. Surely, the tire and wheel doesn't weigh 85 lbs?

Good luck.

Rack on Back

I have a rack on the back that came with our trailer. There is a sticker stating that the spare tire is not included in the 250 pounds.

Thanks for the insight. the battery is easy to take out and put in the truck. The reason I was questioning the weight capacity of the rack was 1. I don't know how much the spare weights and 2. I would need to add a little metal to the rack for the scooter to sit on as it is wider than the rack, so I did not want to chance being over or close because as you know the bounce would kill it.

thanks for the help
John

Wow, if that's the case I'm in good shape. Thank you for that, mine only had the one sticker on it and of course nothing in the manual. I tell you it is lots of fun getting old.
thank you so much,
John

I had a trailer hitch welded to the frame and put a cargo carrier on it so I would not have to worry about the bumper.

Yes that is an option for sure, but, I thought I would try to take advantage of what was there if I could. By the way, the rack is attached to the frame by some semi heavy brackets that run over the the top of the bumper, it is not attached to the bumper as far as I can see.
thanks for the ideas,
John

When in Goshen, I asked Libert the question of adding weight on bumper. They suggested the only safe way to do it would be add to frame, not bumper. One option is to cut bumper off, weld an Extension piece to both frame rails, then add metal to secure a hitch, or add a flip up carry basket. Some FR products have this setup, saw on on a Sabre that came from the factory. Libert can do it, any one else may void warenty. Go figure!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I just want to remind everyone that I am talking about the factory fold up rack on the back not anything to do with the rear bumper.
thanks again,
John
