Our old trailer had a heavy rectangular tube frame, how nice that would be today!!

Pics of generator and mount

Mount is a little bigger than the generator so I can bring it up snug with trailer for towing and then pull it out a few inches to run it. Absolutely no flex at all with generator on it and me standing on it and bouncing. I'll keep you posted as to its durability. I will say that noise and vibration are minimal inside the trailer.

I have exact same generator, will wait for your responses after you've had it on there for awhile!

How much ground clearance do you have with the spare mounted like that?

Great mod!!
I'm curious about the tire also. I like that location much better.

10.5 inches. Axle tube is still lowest point on trailer (at 9 inches). I just cut the mount off and welded it under the tongue. It is such that when you tighten the bolts down completely, the rubber of the tire is pressing against the metal of the tongue so the tire doesn't vibrate any. It is solid.

Spare tire might be hit in a tight rh turn or in jackknifing back in a site.

hallie, you may want to weld a reinforcing plate over the welds where the main frame meets the bumper and you added cross piece, as that will be the first place stress cracks begin.
Also, where your angle braces go down to the bottom of the bumper, it looks like you have just butt-welded them to the bumper. It would be a good idea to add some support there as well.
I have been welding and building steel structures my whole life, so my suggestions are only meant to add to your satisfaction with your project.
No criticism intended.

Thanks for the advice. The 2x2 angle that sits directly in front of the bumper is butt welded to the frame. I cut it so it meets up with the vertical and horizontal parts of frame I beam. I thought about the plate tying all that together, just didn't do it, but would be easy to go back and fix.

I take no criticism, although there is room for some as I am just a hobby welder and slowly getting better at it. Got a pretty good sunburn (weld burn) doing that bumper (won't do that again)

I think I'll be ok with turns as there is nothing under the jeep till you get to the tires or axle and I won't turn that sharp

Not only that, but what about the WDH brackets?

The guy at the dealership told me the wrong ball size, so I had to go to autozone and buy a regular hitch. I did not run the wdh and trailer towed just fine even in winds. I am limited to about 60mph due to aerodynamics of the jeep/trailer combo. I think the equalizer might still fit, but I sent it back and have had no problems with a regular hitch thusfar.

Will keep posted.

You better hope you never tow with a side wind without some sort of sway control. You will get a real up close look at "the tail wagging the dog". Don't ask how I know.

That is why I chopped the extra inch out between the spare tire and the mount. Then moved the mount out closer to one of the frame rails.
No wobble!

Has been about 800 miles on the road so far with no issues. Nice to have the genny at rest stops for running a/c. No issues with clearance on spare mounted under tongue as of yet.

generator mount

I took a mount that curt makes for the rear bumpers of travel trailers, designed for 4 " square tubing. no welding involved. then i went to onan & got a 2600 lp generator, took & fabricated a plate for it to bolt to & attached it to a reciever extenion tube & slid it into the curt hitch. then i ran a 12 volt wire from my panel to the gen set , protected by a auto reset 12 volt fuse , ran a gas line from under my trailer to the gen set . then ran the 120 volt wiring to an interior recepticle , made modifications where i could use shore power or generator power depending on which plug i used. topped it off with a remote control to start & stop it from inside the trailer, nice at night when u are watching tv from the bed. i cna give you more detailed instructions if you need, but i have used this set up on 4 different trailers since 2001 without any problems.

I have a yamaha 2400 gen and I put it INSIDE the camper. Never had any smell (other than bacon) inside and I don't worry about my camper bumper or frame. Worry free is the way to go!! If our campers were intended to carry a generator on the bumper there would be a special place for it back there. Remember: Weight x arm=moment. 75 pound gen 36 inches aft equalls 2700 inch pounds.

2700 lb/inches = 225 lb/ft or a good sized person bouncing on the back bumper.
