Replaced all my CH751 locks finally

After reading about the "universal CH751" locks that the industry uses and having experienced a break in where someone stole most of our RV gear that was in our storage compartments, I finally replaced them all!! 2 weeks ago, someone used their CH751 key and stole lots of our RV gear roughly $400 of gear. Spent $60 on 4 new Tubular Cam Locks with dust covers and had all the keys coded the same. Take my advice, switch out your crappy CH751 locks as soon as you can and save yourself the misery of waking to find a big loss. Install took a whopping 30 minutes total!

Here is where I got mine and I was happy w/ the service! https://ch751.com/

Hidee ho

Sorry for your loss! Good post! We changed our locks too very early on. Better safe than sorry! Happy camping!

I was seriously considering changing out the locks too.

But I ended up deciding not to due to the flimsy construction of my rockwood. It wouldn't matter what lock I use, it can be easily pried open with a screw driver. So, between having my stuff stolen, vs stolen gears+damaged hatch/door, I choose to just having my gears stolen.

I totally understand you though. It is a terrible feeling and I went on a security frenzy after my bikes were stolen. I hope your losses were purely monetary and you could at least get to buy some new shiny gears.

We also had the same thoughts about the generic locks and came to the same conclusion. RVs are just too easy to break into, with or w/o a key. We didn't want to end up with a repair bill AND stolen stuff. So let 'em use a key and not a prybar. So far we have never had anything stolen, knock on wood.

Besides, that's what insurance is for

I changed out all my storage locks for Bauer locks keyed the same as the doors of the trailer. One key is a great solution and one of my doors has the keypad so I can go keyless. They just recently released a cylinder for the outside shower door which also matches the rest of my locks. Bauer has great customer service!

1 key would be great.
I have 6 keys and it is super annoying!!!

1 for front storage, 1 for door, 2 for various hatch doors, 1 for hitch lock, 1 for pad lock (trailer came with the first 4 installed that way)

Any hardware store has like keyed locks for a few dollars each. Will deter the thief of opportunity, which is about all you can do.

For me, getting all the knobs and key positions to match was worth my time. I can see if locked/secured versus having to physically check.

Motion lights are helpful as well. Remember, you do not have to be theft proof, just more difficult then the unit near you (don't have to outrun a bear, just be faster than at least one other person with you).

That's like saying, "I don't lock the doors of my house, because I don't want my windows broken"

locks

I have a CC 29RE and I added a 3 digit cam lock to all the storage/propane/battery doors.....Now when I unlock all the doors I do not have to find my keys.....Just set the code numbers and you are inside.....Only use the keys if we are away from CG for any length of time......Camper normally do not steal from campers as they have no room for stolen goods!!!!!!! That's a funny (bad) analogy! We still lock our compartments, but don't see the need to ensure they are unique keys. If somebody wants in bad enough to try keys, a screwdriver is quicker. So why go to the expense of changing all the locks. If it's worth it to you, do it! Not worth it to me.

I'm glad I replaced mine

Yes it is true that in changing these locks we are keeping the honest honest but honestly ........
I am glad I replaced mine because those 571's were getting to be a b$%ch. The key jams and I have bent one where the cam seal was tight. They rely on those cheap spring loaded hatches for weather protection. One of them fell apart from corrosion when I took it out. Once I went to the cylindrical type, I had a positive crank mechanism with a stronger key design. They also have a full weather cover. Much preferred.

I agree!

And while we're on the topic, can someone explain to my why the outdoor shower has a lock (also with its own, unique key, btw!) Should I be worried about someone stealing some hot water??

It's a pain to have to go find the key anytime I want to rinse off sandy feet after the beach for instance. I'm thinking of changing to a non-keyed latch.

I changed the locks on one of my units and all they did was pry it open with something and took my power cord and some other things. Then I was left with a door to repair. No matter what you do, you can't defend against crazy or crooked.
