Replacing black water sensors

Need some help! When I empty my black water tank, the gauge registers 2/3 full, so I have decided to replace the sensor & wiring all the way back to the gauge panel. I found the mod. to replace the sensors but I can not seem to find how the wires were run up to the sensor? Could use some help.

It looks like Herc made this Mod in June, 1911. I would like to see a comment from him as to how we'll they have functioned since then.

I know Herk has been around a while, but don't think he was even a twinkle in his daddy's eye in June 1911, in fact his daddy probably wasn't even around.

I guess my finger, or something slipped. I believe he made the Mod in 2011.

Blaster, feel free to throw out a PM to Herk to make sure he sees your followup question. He's good with this stuff and can give you an update.

If you follow the GEO method, you'll have less issues regardless which tank probes you have.

I was hoping Herk would chime in for us all to benefit from his experience. I have been using the GEO method for a year and it doesn't help in my case. But I bought the RV used and the sensors may have a build up of someone else's crud on them. I tried the ice cleaning method also and that didn't help clean them off.

Sorry, working on a shooting bench all day.

The Horst probes work great and are highly recommended by me. If you do the gray water tank, save yourself some heartache later and use black tank probes in both holding tanks.

The wiring is very simple. See attached diagram.

2/3 full usually means your tank walls are dirty and there is nothing wrong with your wiring. See troubleshooting guide.

You need to try the RV-Digest-It (from Unique) cleaning.
Unique RV Digest-It Unique Distributing

While the procedure is here (numerous times-search RV Digest it here), this is it in a nutshell.

For CLOGGED tanks - whole bottle (1 QT) - fill with water and sit for a week; drain and turbo flush with system or wand. Repeat until free running.

For SENSOR errors, - 1/2 bottle - fill with water, sit 72 hours, driain and truboflush. - repeat if necessary.

Sensor errors are caused by slime on tank walls.

Does anybody use the hot water from the RV hot water tank when back flushing the black tank? Assuming you have that option on your RV.

I have tried hot water and detergent when I was having sensor problems with the OEM probes. It did not work for me near as well as the enzymes in Digest-It. Others report good results with Rid-X as well.

Check the nuts on the wiring. Had a few loose on previous rig that cause erratic readings. Flush with water, done long enough, should restore their accuracy for a little while.

Herk,

Do you use the Unique all the time or just to clean the tanks? I bought a couple of quarts to try and see if I like it.

I used the geo method and then switched to mixing about a pint of Pinesol and a pint of SuperClean after emptying the black tank until the Goshen rally and bought the Blue Streak Dispensing system. After running out of the Blue Streak solution, I mixed solution of 50% Pinesol and 50% SuperClean to fill the container and since 04Dec, we've have very good luck with it. So far when I check the sensor panel they will not read empty, but reads 1/3, which is what they read when we got the camper new and there had never been anything in the tanks but clear water put in by the dealer. We also do not put paper in the black tank. When I empty the black tank it empties with very few lumps and when the tank flush is activated it only takes about a minute for it to run clear. Unless something changes, I will continue with the 50-50 solution of Pinesol & SuperClean in the dispenser. Cheaper than the geo method also.

I was having the same issue on my Surveyor SV 302. I was tilting the trailer so the dump valve side was lower than the other side. The problem with that was I figured out that the tank drain from the opposite side of the trailer. So when I lifted that side the tank would not empty completely and the sensor would always be two thirds full. Since then I have had no issues with wrong sensor readings. I also have a black flush kit that I use during the dump cycle.

OC, you should make sure it is FOLDED - not wadded in a tiny ball. The reason, of course, is it more easily recycled. You know, you see stuff all the time "contains 25% post consumer waste".

I use the Calgon/Detergent all the time and only use the Unique at the end of season winterization so I can let it work for a minimum of 72 hours. This has to be done while it is still warm out because the enzymes and bacterial do not work so well when it is cold.
