Great idea, Cleon. It looks like the lower handle is just a handle to tie in to the upper one and not actually 'latching' the door down low. If so, I have a suggestion for you to consider. If it was just a bit lower, it would have the kick-panel behind it instead of the screen, for the little hands to be scuffing.
Hey, give it a couple more days, Cleon... then OC, Herk and B will get past the precision clevis concept and have the remote control versions with led lights and titanium tie-rods designed up for you. They're good now.

OC - I totally agree. I was referring to a pushrod from an aviation view and of course there are many other applications where the term pushrod is correct.
In my use of the term, a pushrod is a rod (either solid or hollow) that is used to actuate a component such as a wing spoiler from a hydraulic or electric powered actuator.

Already got a push bar on mine, if we had kids, I'd hook it up like Cleon did.

thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. i have a plan to update the means by which the two handles are connected. right now, when the top handle is used the rod deflects too much to suit me as it overcomes the new lower handles stiffer spring. clevis' and threaded rod sound good in theory but maybe the resulting weight may or may not more than the return springs can compensate for over time. lighter is better. i'm thinking something like fine picture hanging wire and the proper pinch clamps, because the lower one does not have to move when the top one is used to open the door.
