Secure electrical while parked at home

Greetings,

I was concerned about leaving my RV plugged into home power while at home, worried that someone may steal my cords and have access to my storage compartment. On my MBS Sunseeker 2401R there was a flat spot on the bottom of the compartment where I store my electrical and water hoses. I purchased a hatch cover from amazon and installed it on that flat spot. Now I can run my 30amp cord out the hatch to the RV and my 120v extension cord to my outdoor outlet and still lock up my storage compartment. I used a multitool with a narrow blade to cut the hole and smoothed the edges with a rasp. Worked out really well for me. Thought I would share. I think I added some photo's, but not sure if I did it right.

Good idea. Thanks for sharing.

BTW, Leaving that hole open is an invitation for critters to move in.

If I left the door open critters would get in anyway. This at least keeps the human critters out.

I'll close it up while traveling. That hatch I bought from amazon is really nice quality. Got an O ring in it that should seal up nicely

Sorry but I don't think it will stop a thief. They will cut the end off and steal the wire. Not hard to do even with the power on.

I'm sure fortunate to live in a place where I don't have to worry about thieves taking my cords, but do have the critters to deal with less openings less critters. You did a nice clean job on the install

Only thing a lock is good for, is to keep a honest person out.......

Why do you have to run the cords through the compartment and not from the side of the camper directly to your house?

You could also stuff some of that foam pipe insulation in the hole while you have your wires connected. Looks like you have a cap when the wires are not in use. I use a wooden plug in my barn opening (which is made from PVC pipe) to keep the critters out when it is in use. So far it has also worked.

Looks really nice and clean.

What stops the thief from just pulling the larger cord through the hole and unplugging both ends? How do you secure it inside?

Packing the hole with steel wool pads should work well to keep the critters out.

I thought about that this morning lying in bed. I've got the cord rolled up in a trash can inside. It might be difficult to pull out. Maybe I'll put some kind of restraint on it, or tie it in knot. In any case, it keeps the 30 amp to 20amp plug from getting wet in the rain. It also makes it take more time to steal it. Maybe they'll notice my surveillance cameras while they're trying to fish it out.!

I just keep my insurance paid up. Life's to short to worry about a thief. All you can do is slow a thief down. If they want it they will surely take it.

Very nice and clean install.
This isn't a knock on your nice work, but if I was worried enough about someone stealing a cord at my house, I'd be really concerned about the RV itself and all it's contents.

While I don't have the slightest worry about my cord being stolen, I didn't want to use my 25 ft cord at my house. I have a 15amp outlet 3 feet from my shore power port where I park it. I made a custom 15amp to 30amp 6 foot cord. I just leave that one plugged in while were gone camping. When we get home I just plug right in.

I added aircraft cable with aluminum crimps. The cables lock together. One loop on each end lock to power pole as well.

Ray. Understood. Just got about three-quarter inches of rain in 25 minutes. Glad I had my 30 amp to 20 amp connection inside the RV cabinet. In Tulsa we've had issues with people stealing the copper cable that connects the street lights together. In the building that I owned I had people steal the outdoor air conditioner condenser just for the copper. It cost me five bucks and about 30 minutes to remedy the situation on my RV cord. Worth my peace of mind.
