Shelving

decided to do a little cleaning and organizing, so I started fabricating 4 shelves to store some movies instead of in a box on the floor. so far I have completed one.

Thank You all For the positive feed back.

No Worries, I like to share my ideas, I started out thinking about using some 3/4" thick oak I had laying around and realized that a 2 ft board that thick was real heavy. So I went to home depot and found some 1/4" thick red oak, what a weight difference. I built them completely out of 1/4" red oak all glue no nails or screws except for the wall mount and security chain. ooops, almost forgot, I used some decorative trim piece I found at home depot for the facial (its not oak).

one of the best things I like about these small projects is I don't have to be stuck with what I find pre-made in the store. you have a free realm of choices. size, shape, color, materials,.....the list goes on. I guess this is why the word custom comes into play.

good luck on your endeavors.

Thanks! I'm thinking a shelf or two like this in our bathroom would go along way in adding space for the 4 of us... still nervous about drilling into the walls of my TT, never know what's behind that wall panel...

First of all, my walls in the slide out (where I located them) are thin, so I only used 1" long screws for the wall and 1/2" long screws on the shelves. I put the shelf where I wanted it, checked for light switch an outlets in the area, marked inside the holes in the bracket, removed the shelf assembly, using a tiny drill bit, pre-drilled all the marks. The ones that were hollow behind the paneling I used inserts thin enough for 1/8" paneling, the holes that hit solid, I only allowed my drill bit to penetrate 1" so to not go all the way thru the wall. Then I put the shelf back up and secured it on. Just finishing up 2 more today and the last one I am going to finish tomorrow.

Depending on the room I select my material. Kitchen and bathrooms the first thing that comes to mind is water, so whatever I use I ensure it is mildew and mold resistant to include what ever coating I use on it. Then I look for the biggest bang for the buck. In some rooms a shelf will work do to space available where as in other rooms it's more effective to build or even buy a small cabinet and modify it to work. Just sayin...

You're old school.

We still have a handful of VHS tapes roaming around our house but I'm not sure we have a working player anymore. IIRC, they quit manufacturing them just last year.
