Shorter 50 amp power cord

My mom just traded her TT for a new one. This one came with a 50 amp service. The 25' cord is too heavy and too long for her needs. Does anyone make a shorter 50 amp power cord? 10' would be perfect. Is this something i would have to customize myself?

25' is about the shortest 50 amp cord I have found. You can get a replacement connector (Adventurerv.net) for $81 and cut the cord to length, but that may be too short for most campgounds. Quite often when visiting relatives we use a 30 amp cord (much lighter) with adapters and connect to their clothes dryer outlet, runs everything except the second a/c; have also done this at CG that don't have 50 amp available.

our new trailer also came with 50 amp service, and you are right about it being to heavy and too long! At most RV centers you can get either a 1 foot or 25 foot 30 amp cord with the 50 amp twist on connector at the trailer. I am assuming the cord that came with the trailer is not hard wired into the trailer and that it has an outside receptacle were the 50 amp normally attaches.

just re read your post and realized you were looking for a shorter 50 amp cord, and I suggested a lighter 30 amp cord adaptors. sorry probably not what you are looking for!!

Our FW also has 50 amp service to provide for a 2nd AC and the washer/dryer hookup. Since we don't have or use these higher current appliances and depending on your own 50 Amp usage...This may help you too. We use this 30 amp RV Power Cord that connects to the 50 Amp Marinco Locking Connector which I am asuming is what you have too.

The advantage is that even though the cord is still 25' long it is much lighter than the 50 amp counter part. Easier to store and use. Just remember...It WILL NOT provide 50 amps if that is needed.

The downside of shortening is that you have to park where the camper's outlet is close enough to the service post, not where you would like to position it on the site. I don't see any standard out there of where the service post is positioned on sites and think that a 10' cord is always going to work.

If it were me, I would buy 2 or 3 sets of connectors and make 2 or 3 10 foot 50 amp cords.

The downside to this idea (while it does have merit), is the connections are not waterproof and could be a shock hazard; the extra connections are places where resistance could increase due to corrosion and tip burning and the resulting voltage drop would be much higher than in a straight run of the same length; and you would still need to man handle and store all that wire.

Thanks to everyone. No room for a reel and I was just trying to figure out something easier for my 71 year old mom. Yep still camping and loving it. first time she has had a trailer with a 50amp service. Conntek makes a 15' cord. May look into that for her...

If you elect to go the short cord with multiple extension route; plan on having a few stacking milk crates (maybe to store the cords in) that you can invert and route the connections over the top to keep them dry and out of the mud (etc).

I have also wrapped the connections in plastic bags to keep them dry when using my long extension cords.

Go to your local electrical supply house and buy some soo cord in #6 wire 4 conductor. Buy the ends and install. you will want to replace your present cord with the new after you use it. MUCH smaller in dia and very flexible even when cold. Its about half of what you can buy a cord for from the stealers(dealers). I have replaced my cord and it is 20 lbs lighter than the factory cord for the same length. You should not have any more connections than nessary, as mentioned in previous posts.
