Spare Keys

Hi,

My wife and I are on the road fairly extensively. We both carry keys to our fiver, and I have always thought that was enough protection from getting locked out.

This past week I helped a fellow traveler break back into his unit, because a fluke in his lock system put both he and his wife outside and both their keys inside. (Don't ask me how he did this -- I still don't understand it myself.)

But the episode impressed on me the need to have a spare set of keys stored securely outside the unit. I have my solution well in hand. But i was wondering if anyone equally paranoid felt the same need, and if so, how did you solve it?

Thanks.

Rich Phillips

But I also have a spare key hidden on the camper in one of those magnetic lock boxes in case the lock would malfunction.

I keep spare truck and 5er keys inside the truck. No problem locked in there as Ford has the code system on the door to unlock the vehicle.

I purchased one of those real estate type lock boxes from Home Depot. It is more secure than the metal ones with the magnet and not nearly the cost of the more sophisticated electronic push button models. I just hook it to the handle that is right at the door.

and bolted in a hidden location on the outside of the RV.

Along the same lines, last winter me and wife and dog headed to fort desota park for the week. Arrived at park and realized I had left both sets of trailer keys at house, I could get into trailer and all bins but i could not unhook trailer from truck. A nice neighbor let me use his car to drive back st pete( instead of driving truck and trailer ) I now have a third set hidden on trailer. Thank god it was close

I always have one key that fits everything on the camper. I keep a spare in the truck. The truck has a keycode to get in if I left my truck keys in the camper and locked.

I need to get a spare set ordered. Is it easier to order from FR or the dealer?

I did same thing and found the access door on side of my propane tank had a 1/2 hole that was perfect for attaching the lock box. I did this because I have had my side door lock itself on its own 2 times now.

I keep a door key in the outside kitchen. If that happens to be locked I also have a magnetic "hide a key" with a key for the doors and storage compartments stuck inside between the spare tire and tire mount, where it is at the "hide a key" can not be seen but yet is very secure and fairly easy to get to if need be.

Most Ace hardware stores make all sorts of keys (we just had two sets made for our MH, 6 keys for $26) and their less expensive than the dealers.

X2 (or X3?)

I just keep the spare set in my F150... whether we are camping or not. The truck is always there when we are camping. And if I need to stop by the camper (its at a storage place) then I can get in.

The main set hangs in our garage when we are not camping... in case the wife wants to run down to the camper.

Easy, just remove the four screws from the lock assembly to door and separate assembly. The provided instructions are really good. Also RVlock has a good U tube video. Easiest mod I've ever done.

I keep spare key in truck just in case we get locked out, truck is key less entry so that works out well.

When we go with other couples in our camper and we do different things i have a hanging lock box i put on the rear ladder rack that has a code so who-ever gets back can gain access.

There is all kinds of little tricks as you can see from all the posts.

I not only got one of those magnetic key boxes, but I also have a spare key in one of the storage compartments which have a combination lock (I replaced the generic 751 lock).

Have a key hidden. I think it's in a pretty good place. Still there after thousands of miles. Also out of the four of us that travel we have 4 sets of keys. But really how hard is it to get in. Our wonderful burglar seemed to have got in quite easily just by prying the door.
