Question Stove Electronic Ignition Conversion?

Looking to mod our Suburban stove, want to replace the clunky, loud, annoying, rotary turn knob piezo igniter for the stove top burners to an electronic type igniter.

I have a push button on my grill that uses a few AA batteries to light the flame bars, I am thinking why can't I do something like this to the stove top?

Not looking for the household stove auto ignition type setup, cost and complexity more than I want to deal with

Anybody else done this or similar?

I searched in the forum and could not find any articles on doing this.

Don't see why not, except that you will need one for each burner and that could create an an issue. If you figure it out, please post a list of items purchased including part numbers and maybe some pictures of the finished project.

Here's a "universal" kit for under $20...comes with 3 electrodes, but I don't see why you couldn't just use what's already in the stove. Just hook the existing electrode wires to the new electronic ignitor.

RhoZeta,

Did you ever do this mod? I did this in my Keystone Montana, I used a generic electronic igniter I bought at WalMart, and used the current electrode that mounts in the middle of the stove. I then made a tab I mounted on the back side of the original knob with a wire attached and when you turn the knob, that metal tab make a connection with another that actually initiates the spark. Nothing complicated...

I am picking up my new Sierra 365SAQ tomorrow. I know I want to make some sort of mod on that one as well, as the loud clunking one that's included on the stove is just plain stupid when they could integrate an electronic spark so easily.

The 3-sparker kit at Walmart is only $17. You should be able to reuse your existing electrodes.

I did this mod on our stove using a 3 burner BBQ igniter from home depot. I left the oven with it's original setup, since we don't use it much anyway. the ignition button was placed where the clunky was. The stove top burners work great this way and a lot less noisy. Would recommend this to anyone...your wife will love you for it.

I'm doing this with my stove now but having trouble getting the sparker in the correct position to light the gas. It seems to be a 50/50 chance it will light.

Any ideas ?

Yep, went through the same thing. Around the outside of the burner, there are little "V" shaped slots. You need to place the electrode tip right at the bottom of that "V". Once you get it right, it will light consistently first time, every time. The easiest way to do it is light the burner and look where the bottom of the flames start. That's where you want the tip.

That's awesome, just what I need. I've surprised so many people are doing this.

I actually used the original electrodes on the stove and just hooked up the wires to them and it worked just fine

Ive made the mod myself and my wife still doesn't know I did it. I posted how I did it on another forum and many others did it.

Some models do not have ignitors at all. Mine didn't. If it had I definitely would have used them.

My stove had no ignitor either. I got the sparker put in the stove in the corner furthest away for the burners. For the spark wire I used some 14guage wire. I hope it doesn't melt. I know some kits come with tungsten rods, but I couldn't find any.

I put a momentary push switch between the first two gas knobs. Looks better than I expected.

I changed my stove & oven over to the electronic ignition from the "clicker" type. I bought a replacement electronic ignition kit for gas grills at Lowes that has four connections for ignitors. I used the existing ignitors and wires for the three stove top burners and just plugged them in to the new electronic ignition module. I put a new ignitor out of a "clicker" type ignitor kit on the oven pilot light and fished the wire up through with the pilot light tube and just plugged it in to the fourth spot on the new ignition module. Now no more laying down on the floor to light oven pilot light.

I picked up the iginiter from Wally World today but the plastic box is to big to fit it in our stove. The burner pipes with the valves take up a lot of space. Going to check around to find a smaller igniter.

Did the Mod today--------

I did the mod today to my stove, same as "GEORGETOWN". Already had the "twist sparker" for each top burner. The battery powered one from Walmart works great. was very simple to mod.

Had to enlarge the hole in the stove, used a hole saw made for installing antennas for two-way radios. First I used a piece of sheet metal 1" wide, 2" long with two holes to match existing screw holes where old manual sparker was removed. Mounted the piece of sheet metal behind the stove front panel to cover the existing hole. This provided a place for the 3/4" hole saw pilot drill bit a place to start for enlarging the hole. Used a round "RASP" file in my drill to enlarge to 7/8" for the new module. What a neat mod that improved the function of lighting the top burners.
I also used a lithium AA battery for long life, the lithium battery will not break down and destroy your module as a regular Alkaline AA battery will.
I even used black round sticky patches placed over the screw holes, better than factory

Thanks Forest River Forum for another great mod
