Super Chip or those like it

Has anyone used a Super chip or something like it to improve towing. I am close to the limits of my TV capabilities when fully loaded but not over, I have a couple of hundred pounds to spare. I thought using one of these may give me some more wiggle room. Has anyone used these for a GAS engine, if so what are your thoughts, did you see improvement?

Usually TV limitations are based on Non engine related properties such as brake capacity, and chassis and drive train capacity. Adding a tuning chip may provide more power but not impact the mechanical limitations listed above.

I don't think just a "chip" EPROM change will do what you want without being able to get more air into the cylinders or be able to get the air out of the cylinders more efficiently $$$. Anybody I've seen try to get more out of and engine has gone to new induction and exhaust systems. Ford has a novel idea to get more from small displacements. They call it Ecoboost!

What vehicle is your TV? Tuners can and do help with towing as they improve the engine tuning and transmission shift points.

Just an example, 5Star tuning for the 3.5 Ecoboost gives, on average, 50 HP and 50 TQ to the wheels. These are dyno'd results, not fictitious claims like a K&N air filter.

Hemifever tuning with a DiabloSport Trinity tuner on a 5.7 Hemi will get you around 30 HP and 30 TQ to the wheels. Shift points are also dramatically improved.

Most modern engines have plenty of headroom for intake and exhaust to get air in and out. They are simply tuned down to comply with fuel economy and emission standards.

If you do decide to get a tuner I'd recommend spending the extra bucks for a programmable tuner with custom tuning. Like the DiabloSport tuner with HemiFever tuning you get lifetime tunes from HemiFever. They'll send you custom tunes based on your application, be it towing or performance, and tailored to any mods you'd have, like intake or exhaust work.

A tuner can and will improve towing CAPABILITY. However it will not Increase CAPACITY

I.E. Your current load may be towed more efficiently, but adding a tuner won't let you to more weight

My TV is a 2014 GMC Sierra SLT Z71. Max tow on it is 9600 lbs. My new 2016 Flagstaff is an 8321 KBS which weighs in at 8004. I bought this off of a Rockwood/Flagstaff 2015 model which shows 7300 lbs. Was surprised when I saw the 2016 being heavier. Still trying to get a reason why the weight increase. I am wondering if it was a correction to literature more than anything else as nothing else with the unit seems to have changed.

Is the 8321 weight a scaled loaded weight, a sticker weight on the unit or a brochure dry weight? Propane, batteries and options add weight above brochure weights. The trailer will then weigh even more once you load it with your stuff. If you are that close on towing capacity , I'm wondering where you stand on payload.

I have a K&N cold air intake and a Banks program installed. Big improvement and pleasure driving. No more 10 mile per hour spread going over overpasses.

asquared; i'm with you on this and that is my concern. I take delivery of the unit early next month and there is a scale right next to my dealer so I am going to have the unit weighed. Then I will just have to be real skinny for the next 1.5 years with what I put in it as I am intending to get a more capable truck in the future. Not a huge issue as we camp almost all the time with our kids who have trucks and can carry the generator, extra gas, extra water. Its a bit of an inconvenience but not one that can't be over come. Shoot, I may even pull the trigger on a TV that can pull more sooner. Was just thinking there might be a way to increase my capacity without moving up in TV sooner as I love my current TV and it only has 12K on it.

You won't be impressed with a tuner on a gas engine, the increases in HP and torque are so minor...IMO, hold onto your cash and wait for the next opportunity to purchase a more capable truck/powerplant

It would drop 5 miles an hour in cruse before accelerating up to 4000 rpm then back off after cresting the overpass and wind up 5 miles over set speed. Now it doesn't do that. If you run 95 north and south you know that they built a lot of overpasses. I like to drive in cruse unless in very hilly terrain. I am also towing a car trailer with a 3100SS class C.

Power pickup with Hypertech chip enhancer

I told my wife after just 2 hours pulling our 35 ft trailer with our new GMC Yukon Denali with a 6.2 liter Premium only engine. It just didn't have enough power. I took 10 minutes of my retirement time and set up the Hypertech max power program in this SUV. The power increase was amazing and even the mileage ticked up about 10%. I pulled another 20,000 miles before we bought a new 40 Cedar Creek 5th wheel and a new GMC Sierra Denali 1 ton diesel. We have enjoyed both of our RV's and spend about 5 months or more each year traveling this beautiful country of ours.

Bully Dog Gt

I used the Bully Dog GT Tuner on my 2011 GMC Sierra and it made a nice difference. Got better mileage towing and it towed better.

That 6.2 was the vormax (I believe it's is called ) and it us gas.. They misfire real bad unless the premium is run in them. That would suck when the fuel costs were up..

Vortec is the 6.0. I thought / think the 6.2 was the vormax. That is what they called it when I bought my 1500, I got the 5.3 instead.
