To me $60 is no big deal, I live in the lightning capital of the world. If I'm in the middle of nowhere and something goes wrong with the unit - or if it takes a surge and fries - I can bypass it in minutes. When back in town, buy a new one and snap it in. But, to each his own. if you feel you will never have a problem with it, or don't mind rewiring when you do, then hard wiring is the way to go.

I did it this way for two reasons. One, the code does not recommend that auto-transformers be permanently installed. By using connectors, it is not. Two, if it should fail for any reason, my camping trip will not be ruined and will take just minutes to remove.

I don't have the portable but I do have the hard wired PI unit. Mine would not work with the generator till I made a neutral / ground bonding plug for the generator.

Make one of these and plug it into the unused 20 amp socket.
A short 12 gauge wire connecting the Neutral (silver screw) to the Ground (Green Screw). NO contact with Hot terminal (Black Screw).

I have a 50 amp surge protector! Can I use a dog bone 30 amp to 50 amp and plug 30 amp into pole then plug 50 amp surge protector into dog bone and then 50 amp cord from motorhome into it?

Yes, you can. Remember though you will still have that 30 amp total limit and while all the breakers in your camper will be "happy", you can overload the supply panel, if you are not careful, which will be fused at 30 amps total summed across both legs.

While I tend to take for granted that everyone realizes that, it is easy to forget. When you are used to having 50 amp service, which is 70 amps more than 30 amp service, it is easy to overload 30 amp service.
I was just thinking about this, and you could just buy one male and female connector, and use the "portable" surge protector as a semi permanent install inside the camper.
